The
European Union, Austria, and the Future of Central Europe
30 April – 2 May 1998
Princeton, New Jersey
With the support of the Austrian Cultural Institute, New York,
LISD held the conference, “The European Union, Austria, and
the Future of Central Europe,” at Princeton University on
April 30 – May 2, 1998. The conference was divided
into three parts: the state of the EU, external dimensions,
and internal developments. The conference convened leading
experts from academia, business, diplomacy, and the EU to discuss
the current state of EU institutions; the consequences of the Euro;
the questions of deepening the European integration process; the
common foreign and security policy; the selective inclusion of
new member states; the political-economic, industrial, social,
and cultural dimensions of the enlargement; and the resulting effects
on the tri-lateral framework of the EU, U.S., and Asia.
The timing of the conference coincided with the date when the
EU officially decided in Brussels which states would join the Euro
and with which conversion rate.
