Sound of Europe

LISD Director Wolfgang Danspeckgruber and Andrew Moravcsik,
Professor of Politics, Director of the Woodrow Wilson School’s European
Union Program, and an LISD Faculty Advisor participated in the
conference launching the Austrian presidency of the European Union,
January 27-28, 2006 in Salzburg, Austria. The conference, “The
Sound of Europe,” convened politicians, diplomats, scholars,
and representatives of the private sector to discuss the meaning
and role of Europe in today’s global community, existing
tensions within the European Union, and proposals for practical
solutions to critical issues currently confronting the EU.
Danspeckgruber chaired a panel at the conference that analyzed
the opportunities that exist and challenges that face the EU in
the twenty-first century from a global perspective. Moravcsik
was a panelist at the opening session of the conference which looked
at the current EU impasse resulting from the French and Dutch rejection
of the EU Constitutional Treaty and proposed strategies for moving
forward. Panelists at this session included the prime ministers
of France and the Netherlands, the German Foreign Minister, and
the EU Commissioner on Foreign Affairs.
