Iran,
Its Nuclear Ambitions, the Region, and the West
31 March - 1 April 2006
Princeton, New Jersey
LISD sponsored the private, off-the-record conference, "Iran, Its Nuclear
Ambitions, the Region and the West," on March 31 and April 1, 2006. A
public roundtable discussion was co-sponsored with the Woodrow Wilson School
on March 30. During two days of intensive discussions, conference participants
engaged with the pressing issues stemming from Iran's nuclear aspirations.
The meeting focused on four broad dimensions of the Iranian nuclear situation:
Iran’s perception of itself and its role in the region; Iran's interstate
relations, especially within the Middle East and Central Asia; technical facets
and possibilities to diffuse the crisis; and the military options available
for addressing Iran’s nuclear objectives. The conference brought
together high-level diplomats, representatives from the UN Security Council
and UN permanent missions, academics, and policy experts from more than a dozen
nations, including the United States, European Union, Israel, China, Russia,
India, Pakistan, and Iran. A special feature of the Friday sessions was
a video link with the Geneva Center for Security Policy in Switzerland and
the viewing of an address made there by Manouchehr Mottaki, the Foreign Minister
of Iran. A highlight of the Saturday sessions was the participation via
video link of Javad Zarif, Permanent Representative of Iran to the UN.
