Iran’s
Security Challenges and the Region
17-20 March 2005
Triesenberg, Liechtenstein
The conference, “Iran’s Security Challenges and the
Region,” held in Triesenberg, Liechtenstein, March 17-20, 2005
brought together senior policymakers and academics from Iran, Europe,
the United States, and Iran’s neighbors, as well as representatives
of government and international organizations. The conference
focused on three issues: Iran’s current security challenges;
the debate about non-proliferation; and Iran’s emerging relationships
with its neighbors, the U.S., EU, Russia, and China. By exploring
such issues as the path forward on nuclear non-proliferation, Iran’s
role in the recent democratic transitions in both Afghanistan and
Iraq, and the emerging regional tensions over water, organized crime,
and the drug trade, the meeting facilitated senior policy- and decision-makers
to define the issues and explore new policy approaches. In
order to enable Iranian leaders to participate in the meeting, participants
video conferenced with participants in Tehran.
To facilitate frank and open discussion, all discussions were private.
The conference was the ninth in the Liechtenstein Colloquium on
European and International Affairs series, held under the auspices
of LISD and the Princely House of Liechtenstein.
