Topics in International Relations: International Crisis Diplomacy

Course Description:

This course explores the intricacies, challenges and possibilities of international diplomacy during crises between states or between state and non-state actors. Students will analyze two clusters of international crises, their origins and development, as well as potential suggestions for amelioration, with specific focus on the Balkans and the Middle East. The course will explore the causes of each crisis, the role of leadership and negotiators, outside power interests, crisis mgmt interests, as well as the geopolitical context for each case. Finally, the course will focus on environmental and health crises, in the search for a new international order.
