Subject: Curlew Sandpiper at Thompson's Beach
A bright-plumaged Curlew Sandpiper was reported yesterday, Saturday, by shorebird banders David Mizrahi and Patty Hodgetts at Thompson's Beach, on the Delaware Bayshore in Cumberland County. (No, they did not actually band the bird.) The bird was seen in the late morning (about mid-tide) close to the right side of the road ony about 50 yards in from where the road is gated and one has to continue in by foot. The bird then flew to the left side of the road and farther out and was lost. This extensive area supports very large numbers of shorebirds, and much of the area is difficult or imposible to check. But the area close to the closed road is always a favorite for many birds, so one can hope that the bird continues to visit there periodically.
Father south, a Mississippi Kite continued to be seen sporadically over the Beanery in Cape May, and a very-rare-in-spring Long-billed Dowitcher continued at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor.
