Poss.Red-necked Stint, Brigantine, 30 Aug 2000

Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 20:00:52 -0400 From: Laurie Larson Subject: Possible Red-necked Stint, Brigantine, 8/30

This Stint was not relocated by a party of observers today, 8/31 but may still be present. Please forward any additional information! Thanks to Chip Krilowicz for the report.

> >Hi Laurie, >Jean Gutsmuth & I where at Forsythe today (2:00 P.M.). At the North West corner of the North West pool we seen what we believe to be a Red-necked Stint. It was in the short grass around a Pink Swamp Rose Mallow. Only 40 yards off the road where the main body of water turns to grass (before the barn owl box). > >The bird caught my eye due to the bright buff appearance. It was the same size as a Semipalmated Sandpiper the scapulars where brightly outlined and Rufous surrounding a dark center. The legs where jet black and the wings extended beyond the tail. The bill matched the Semipalmated Sandpiper. My only reservation was the neck and cheek where gray with dotted streaking on the neck suggesting a post breeding plumage. This gray color stopped abruptly and the belly and undertail coverts where white. > >Jean & I seen the Little Stint in Cape May last year and strongly feel that this was a Stint. > >We viewed this bird for 15-20 minutes and in the same scope view we had Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers for comparison. The bird flew with the entire group but we feel it did not go very far. We could not relocate it. A Red-necked Stint was also reported in the book at Brig a week before, we found out later. > >Chip Krilowicz
