A Loggerhead Shrike was seen on Saturday very close to last year's winter location on the Delaware Bayshore.

Laurie, Ron Kegel from Clayton,N.J. Wanted to ring you up and let you know of a sighting of a loggerhead shrike. My wife Linda and I took a ride out of Cedarville to Bay Point in Cumberland County. When coming back from the point I noticed a shrike perched on the telephone wire. We both got a tremendous look at the bird within 75-100'. The bird had the dark mask leading right into the bill. The bill was dark throughout. Interestingly enough it was about .7 of a mile from where our Christmas count group observed a similiar (same?) bird! The bird in early January was perched near a group of farm buildings (Sheppard Farms-green buildings) on the road out to the point (down from the entrance to Nantuxent WMA). This bird was seen further out on the road to the point. There is a shallow marsh pond on the right hand side of the road and the bird was on the wire up about .1-.2 mile on the right. Maybe it's not a big deal but sometimes it can be difficult to see the shrikes in Jersey. The late Ed Manners helped us to identify the bird in the winter. He is and will be missed.Laurie thought I would pass along the info. Hope others might see.Good birding.By the way the bird was seen on Saturday the 23rd around 3:30 P.M. One other note, good flight of osprey over Clayton (Gloucester Co.) today Sunday the 24th!

Thanks very much to Ron for the report of a species that is now almost extirpated from New Jersey, and has been added to the list of species for which reports are requested by region editors and the records committee. If the bird remains, please keep us all informed.
