Golden Plovers and Upland Sandpipers
Salem/Cumberland Counties

The Johnson Sod Farm (located between Pole Tavern and Deerfield on Rt. 77, on the border of Cumberland and Salem counties) has been good for "sodpipers" this week. John Danzenbaker reported a Buff-breasted Sandpiper and about ten Golden Plovers at mid-week. Today, John LaVia saw 2 Upland Sandpipers and 12 Golden Plovers. I was there this morning and saw about the same numbers; also there were Bobolinks overhead and Horned Larks on one of the cut-sod areas. Nearby, at the corner of Center and Harmony rds. west of Deerfield, we saw four more Uplands on tilled ground, and one more was on Swing West Rd in a mowed alfalfa field.

Two adult Sandhill Cranes were on Alloway-Friesburg Rd., just west of Bostwick Lake Park, feeding in a soybean field, but they flew after we had watched them for five minutes or so. This area is within five miles of the Johnson Sod farms, so keep an eye out for the cranes if you are looking for the sod farm birds.
