Loggerhead Shrike:
On Friday 9/29 and on Saturday, 9/30 three different parties reported seeing the Loggerhead Shrike on Bay Point Road, Cumberland Co.
Directions from Bob Schmidt: "To get there, take Jones Island Rd (CR 610) south from Cedarville. Make a right onto Bay Point Road and from that intersection, it was 1.3 miles down the road. You will pass some buildings on the left for Sheppard's Farm but the sign on them is partially blocked. The Shrike was .8 mile past those buildings, just past a small pond on the right. It was mainly on the telephone wires but did come up from hunting and land in a couple of small trees near the road. It quickly returned to the wires though." George Nixon reported GPS coordinates of N39-18-19.5, W75-14-13.0 for the small pond and was there around noon on Saturday. Jim Zamos reported that the nearest telephone pole to the site is labeled "BP307-30LS" and saw it during the afternoon on Saturday.
Some information about the Cranes' daily movements is beginning to emerge. They seem to be present at the "usual spot" early and late in the day; Alec Christensen reported no luck seeing the Cranes on Walters/Harmony Road and Seeley Road between 12:30 and 4:30 on Saturday. However, Bob Schmidt and Tom Southerland did locate them there Friday about 5-6 PM at that site. Arie Gilbert saw them between 5 and 6 on Sunday, 9/24 and conversed with the nearby homeowners, who said that time of day is when the cranes faithfully return from wherever they spend the afternoon.
Pierre Bannon writes: "The Common Crane is back at Barraute, in the Abitibi region of Northwestern Quebec. It has reappeared one day earlier than last year exactly in the same spot. And it is still accompanied by an adult Sandhill Crane and two immature hybrids." Since the New Jersey cranes and the single immature bird are still present, these are two different families.
