Subject: Western Tanager and Sabine's Gull updates, 14 Oct.

The Western Tanager was still present today at Sandy Hook, Linda Mack reports:

"Found the Western Tanager about 11:00am this morning while leading a MCAS trip for the NPS. It was feeding in Hackberry trees in the area where the trail to the hawk watch platform breaks off (towards the right) from the Fisherman's Trail. Refound the bird at 4:08pm in the same area with Tom and Margot Southerland.

"Both times today the bird was feeding within the leaf canopy of Hackberry trees and did not remain visible for long. Both this morning and this afternoon it flew into the thicker Beach Plums, beyond the split rail fence adjacent to the hawk watch platform (facing the ocean). "

The Sabine's Gull was enjoyed by many people today; thanks to Frank Windfelder, Jennifer Hanson, and Gary Wood for reports. Frank noted some disappointing human behavior:

"While there, however, an overzealous photographer succeeded in flushing the bird while it was a short distance offshore. At that point, a number of birders had just arrived. They missed the bird as a result. Plus, this kind of behavior might discourage the bird from returning to this location."
