Hi Laurie,
I just received a phone call from John Scavetto saying that he, Andy Egan and Ed Borowic viewed a male Western Tanager at Sandy Hook. The bird was seen from the observation deck at the south pond (a.k.a. the nike pond). Access the spot from the visitor center and take the old dune trail north to the deck on the left that overlooks (barely) the south pond. The bird was seen in the vegetation off to the left. John described it as being yellow overall with two white wing bars and noticeable orange around the face and base of the bill.
Sandy Hook is doing road construction, but the visitor center lot should be open. If not, park behind the ranger station and take the dirt trail on the east side of the road. When you come to a crossroads in the trail, make a left and walk a short distance to the observation deck.
Thanks,
Scott
