Subject: Wood Stork over Middlesex County
I received the following report from Dan Brill late on Weds., Nov. 8. I suppose one's best hope is just to keep looking up!
"At 1:15pm today, a Wood Stork flew over my home in South River (Middlesex County). It was apparently just a flyby. I watched it for ten minutes before it disappeared to the south. Here's a snap description: Large, lanky bird with about a 6' wingspan. The feet and legs project well beyond the short tail. The head and long neck are dark, with a thick, decurved bill. All of the primaries and secondaries are dark. The body and under-upperwing coverts are whitish. It soared for most of the observation with wings drooping a bit at the primaries. Head and neck were held straight. It flapped rarely but when it did, the beats were quick and stiff in comparison with Great Blue Heron."
