Hummers, Cape May & Linwood, 17 Nov. 2000

Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 07:28:30 -0500
From: Paul Lehman
Subject: hummers and closure

First the hummer news, then news of a closure at Brigantine NWR.

The Rufous/Allen's Hummingbirds in Linwood and Cape May both continued as of Friday. The bird (reported earlier as a "Selasphorus") that was at CMBO Goshen from last Saturday through Wednesday, but now gone, appears to may well have been a Calliope Hummingbird. The bird had odd-colored throat feathers (that appeared more typical of Rufous/Allen's), but its tail can now be studied in detail--given the wonders of videotape--and important characters seen there, and also involving bill and possibly face, point toward it likely being a Calliope.

Also:

I have just learned that the tour route at Brigantine Division of Edwin B. Forsythe NWR will be closed Saturday, 18 November. There has been what is believed to be an outbreak of cholera in brant, with about 100 birds found dead. It is unknown how long the closure will last. Please call the refuge office for more information - (609) 652-1665.
