Subject: Barrow's Goldeneye and Tufted Duck
NJBIRDS,
Don Sutherland writes that both Barrow's Goldeneye and Tufted Duck are present again this winter in Monmouth Co. An adult drake Barrow's was in Horseshoe Cove today with another bird that appeared to be a first-winter drake.
A Tufted Duck, apparently a first year male, was found along Princeton Avenue in Brick on Friday. Evidently, there's no public access to the area. However, if the ice starts to break up the bird may move around a bit. Old Sam's Pond in Point Pleasant has been a fairly regular place, with one report last November of a female.
Although these two species seem to be annual on the north shore in recent years, they are still rarities for which descriptions and photos are deeply appreciated by the NJBRC. It's particularly hard to unravel how many birds there are, whether they are returning year after year, etc., if nobody takes time to report them!
Good birding,
Laurie
