Subject: POSSIBLE Ivory Gull
NJBIRDS:
The following was received today from Rick Radis. If anyone looks and sees something really great, please let us know ASAP. --Paul Lehman
I may have had a 1st year Ivory Gull yesterday in the Hudson R. at Edgewater, near the GW Bridge. I got a distant look at the bird with bins, but by the time I had my scope set up I had lost the bird. I stayed at the spot for about 45 minutes with no luck. The gull did seem to have that dirty-face look with a tail band and what looked at a distance like dark spots on the tips of the primaries; and it seemed stocky. But I didn't have a close
look at the bill and the bird was fairly distant. I've seen imm. Ivories ca. 15-16 times in the Hudson R. in NY, in New England and the Canadian Maritimes; but I missed the 1986 Liberty SP bird by about 15 minutes. So I'm not 100% sure, but I'd say it was probably an Ivory, at least to my own satisfaction. I know gulls are moving this time of year and often don't linger, but you might want to pass it along.
