Townsend's Solitaire, update for 30 December 1998

The Solitaire was still present today despite the arrival of the cold weather. A report from Hank Burk is followed by fuller directions to the site from Bob Barber.

Thanks to Hank and Bob, and to Wendy Malmid, Bob Confer, and Tom Southerland for their information.

Laurie,

Just an update for Wednesday, December 30. The Townsend's Solitaire appeared today at 11:48 perched on top of an isolated leafless tree visible from the dirt bank and remained in view for two minutes. It then jumped down out of view until at least until 12:20 when I left.

Good Birding,
Hank Burk

Hi Laurie,

The easiest way to the Townsend's Solitaire site, is by turning off of route 47 south on Glade Road (right) in Delmont NJ. There is a sign that says East Point, and Heislerville. Do not turn off this road...go straight and look for the sign for Main St. in Heislerville. It is on your right, and hidden until you get on top of it. Check the odometer here since you want to go between 1.1 and 1.2 miles past this point. About half way there (approx.) the road bends hard left. This is East Point Road, but I don't think there is a sign. The area where the bird is being seen has embankments on both sides of the road, and a solid line of Red Cedar trees. The bird has been found the past two days on the left side of the road, by scanning the cedars and dead snags out on the marsh, from the top of the embankment. Maybe this description will alleviate any confusion.
