A Brief History of Human Powered Transportation

Light-weight materials had been tried before the advent of artificial composites. The photograph shows an 1897 bike made from bamboo - a natural composite material. The tubular bamboo sections were joined using metal lugs, a technique still employed in some carbon fiber-epoxy composite bikes.
