A fixed concentration of surface atoms is shown diffusing into a semi-infinite
solid by a vacancy mechanism. The picture on the left illustrates the random
motion of the atoms due to the vacancy transport mechanism. On the right
is shown the concentration profile of the green atoms as a function of
diffusion time.
