Fatigue Considerations in Design
 

· Aircraft are light weight structures and components such as the gas turbine engines are subjected to high stresses during use. The shown JT8D fan hub fatigue failure on an MD-88 occurred on the ground.

· The failure by fatigue cracking, attributed to metal property changes produced when the hub tie-rod holes were drilled, split the fan-hub into three sections.
