Kinetics and Microstructural Control

· Cost and capacity considerations preclude using furnace reheating to control the steel rail microstructure.
· When alloyed with Cr and Mo, the austenitic rolled steel can be cooled on conventional racks and a fine pearlitic structure can be obtained.
· The Brinell hardness distribution in the rail cross section is shown.
· When fabricated from this alloy the rail has a 60 % increase in life, does not develop martensite in welds, and has an extended fatigue life, all without any change in the fabrication method.
