Composite Materials

Fire Safety

· Nano-composite wire-insulation made from a nylon polymer and 1 nm clay particles is claimed to show fire resistance, an important issue in space and aviation applications.
· Gilman and Kashiwagi of the fire sciences research group at the National Institute of Science and Technology have shown that these composites have a heat release rate that is 63% less than that of the polymer alone for a clay content of only 5%.
· In addition to providing fire resistance the clay particles increase the mechanical properties of the polymer, nylon-6.
