Notch, Notch Toughness
Index
A notch cut into a material acts as a stress concentrator, the stress at the notch tip being about three times the average stress. The diagram shows notch configurations used in (a) Charpy, (b) Keyhole Charpy, and (c) Izod, high strain rate impact testing. Both the bar dimensions and those of the notch are specified for these tests.

In the tests, the energy required to fracture the material is measured. Brittle fracture is associated with low energy absorption, ductile fracture with high energy absorption. The absorbed energy is known as the notch toughness.
