Here is a variant of a variant used by Jad in France:

Basically it's like your "dead men tell tales" variant, except when there are more dead men left than remaining alive players. In this case, alive players cannot vote and only dead people can (of course they slept at night like the others). Games are longer because there can be only one player at the end.
