This variant works only in a game where the moderator wakes up everybody in turn (most commonly in a Multiple Life game). A random civilian card is selected before the game by the moderator to be the Vigilante for the game. Civilians can then choose to try to kill someone at night. Only the player with the card chosen by the moderator will actually kill his/her target. Also, since the actual number of the Vigilante card is unknown, there is no sure way of knowing if the character is dead or not.

This variant was introduced by Russel Negin sometime in the summer of 2001, and we had lots of fun trying to exert our power. We only played it once, though.
