As promised, this exam only covers the
last half of the course. You will note a slightly different format in the
questions that I hope will make it easier to answer them. As with the
midterm, please make some explicit references to either lectures or
readings in the answers (but do not quote at length). Answers should be
about 500-750 words long. They must be typed and NOT right justified.
Answers are due in Wilson College Office no later than 4 PM on January
19th. UNEXCUSED LATE PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Good luck!
Answer each of the questions below.

Imagine you are a consultant hired by each of these two countries and
you need to write a policy memo concerning what strategy they should
follow in the 21st Century. Your memo should include a brief historical

what you see as major challenges and promises, and some recommendations.

policy:

- debate between inequality and growth
- state involvement in the economy.

how these two societies are very different from the United States.
Another is to suggest how the person can begin to understand the social
and political dynamics at play in these countries. Write this manual for
ONE of these topics below:
- definitions of race
- gender roles
- class and differential access to resources

critical differences or define basic similarities and how these patterns
can help us understand these two countries better.
- religious faith

- arts
- popular culture
D.
The University has asked you to help them invest some of the
endowment. They definitely want to put some in EITHER Cuba or Mexico, but
would like to know what to expect in these societies over the next decade.
Write memo that uses the historical, economic, social, and cultural
knowledge you have acquired to predict where each of these societies will
be in the year 2010. Suggest where a million or two may be safest and
why.
