Burn Binders' Ticket Gallery

The purpose of this gallery is to illustrate (with digital images) Douglas Ball's written descriptions and numbering scheme of James Burn and Company's bookbinder's tickets. The ticket images are much enlarged from actual size (at about 200% of the original) for ease of identification when using the gallery as a 'cheat sheet.' (What is lost here is both the actual size of the tickets as well as their sizes relative to one another.) Examples of several tickets have not yet been found and are so indicated. All the information listed, except as noted below, is extracted from Ball's Victorian Publishers' Bindings (Williamsburg, Virginia: The Book Press, 1985).

My work builds upon Ball's ticket research. It is based on both private and institutional library book collections containing a largely different mix of 19th century English publishers' bindings than those available to Ball. As a result, I have made discoveries that expand both the number of Burn tickets that Ball listed as well as the dates of their use.

All Burn tickets not described in Ball's book are marked "Not in Ball." Some tickets "Not in Ball" are variants of tickets that he does list and are marked "variant" under the appropriate scheme number. These variants extend Ball's listings. All new Burn tickets (and non-ticket Burn binders' marks) are described my me and are preceded by my surname (versus Ball's) but extend his numbering scheme.
Ticket dates of use are a bit of a mish-mash. Tickets described by Ball for which I have not yet discovered an example list his dates. The dates for all variants, as well as the new Burn tickets and non-ticket Burn binders' marks, are based on my discoveries. For the remaining tickets Ball described, i.e. most of the Gallery, the dates are usually a combination of Ball's and my own. That is, whether my discoveries extended his dates of use at the beginning or end, or at both.

Tickets below with a link will take you to a page that provides a bit more information about the ticket and lists the titles in which it was found, i.e. books that I have seen and recorded. These titles are in order by date, with some erratic adherence to publisher after that. In the future I will also list separately on each page, as appropriate, titles from bibliographies, such as Michael Sadleir's XIXth Century Fiction, that are noted as having a Burn ticket.
