We flew into Dakar, Senegal and took a bush taxi (Peugeot 505 for hire)
to Diaobe, Senegal which is a border town near the border with Guinea.
Here's a little lunch stop at a rice bar east of Dakar. That's Sue
and our friend Paul:
We stayed overnight in Diaobe at a hotel that you will not find in a
Fodor's guide:
Here's how the bath water worked...
And though my sister will scold me for overdramatizing this place, here's
the toilet:
But for completeness, I will also say that the people who ran this
place were some of the nicest people around. And, two rooms plus
a **fresh** (ie, killed for us) chicken dinner cost about $3 total.
After overnighting in Diaobe, we gassed up this snazzy Guinean bush
taxi and headed for Susan's town: Koundara.
View from Susan's kitchen window in Koundara. Yes, those are goats
back there. They were handy since they ate any leftovers...
Blacksmith's shop in Koundara. (Note the Chicago Bulls jersey...)
Market Ladies in Koundara. The fabrics and the colors they wear are really wonderful!
Here's Sue and some of her students on top of Mont Badiar, a hike we
did near Koundara.
After a week or so in Koundara (I'm skipping because I was tired of
scanning!) we headed back to Dakar by taking a very strange bush taxi ride
to Tambacounda. Here's the road our driver chose to take. (Imagine
a maniacal laugh as he said in Pulaar "Pretty cars don't go back here!!")
A theme in vacations of mine seems to be cows in the road. Here's
the same road to Tambacounda, now with cows in it. This picture also gives
you a sense of the interior of our fine vehicle....
That's it for now... When I get more time, I'll scan in the east africa
half!
