A Note on the Web Mounting of the William O. Douglas oral history interview transcript:

William O. Douglas or his interviewer, Princeton University professor of political science, Walter F. Murphy, never proofed the following series of interview transcripts. Transcribed directly from cassette tapes recorded in the early 1960s, the interviews were closed until Douglas’s death in 1980. This year Princeton student Laura McPherson ’00, under my supervision, converted the paper copy to electronic form. She utilized Caere’s Omnipage 8.0, and then converted the text to HTML with Microsoft FrontPage. In employing Caere’s optical character recognition software, many “stealth typos” were created – words were read incorrectly but as other legitimate words, thereby eluding the spell checker (for example “Justice Tom Clark” was read as “Justice Tan Clark”). We have attempted to find and eliminate all of these. However, if there are any questions, the original typed transcript may be consulted in person at the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library, or you may contact the library at mudd@princeton.edu. Please note that the following web pages do not have a 1:1 correspondence with the original typed transcript. References should be made to the interview cassette number, with some contextual information as to where in the interview the passage occurs. In addition, soon you may listen to the digital versions of the original tapes via Northwestern University’s History and Politics Out Loud web site to make your own decisions on any questionable portions.
