Non-human Primate Studies: Overview

We have developed methods to perform functional brain imaging studies in behaving non-human primates in collaboration with Drs. C. Gross, Princeton University, and T. Moore, Stanford University. The macaque brain is the most widely studied animal model for human neocortical organization and function. However, human and macaque brains have never been studied in direct comparison due to differences in techniques that are mostly invasive in studies of the macaque brain and non-invasive in studies of the human brain. Functional brain imaging offers the opportunity to study the functional organization of the macaque and the human brain in direct comparison using the same technique. Using our newly developed monkey fMRI methods, we currently study the functional organization of visual cortex in macaques and, in direct comparison, in humans.
