ARABIC Fall Semester *ARA 101 Elementary Arabic na, npdf Professor: N. Coffin Description/Objectives: In this course, students are trained, through the use of an audio/visual method, to speak, understand, read and write Modern Standard Arabic, the form of Arabic shared by all Arab countries. Classroom time is devoted to conversation (skits and discussions) and grammar exercises (including skim-reading tasks) stemming from the video material. Consistent emphasis is placed on authentic materials that derive from the living cultural context. Coffin Description/Objectives: In this continuation of first-year Arabic, students receive additional speaking and listening practice and attain greater reading and writing proficiency through the study of more elaborate grammar structures and the reading of more sophisticated texts. ARABIC Spring Semester ARA 102 Elementary Arabic na, npdf Professor: staff Description/Objectives: This course continues the study of Modern Standard Arabic commenced in Arabic 10l. Emphasis is placed on grammatical analysis; writing and reading of increasingly longer, unvocalized texts; further vocabulary acquisition, and continued practice in listening and speaking MSA. Coffin Description/Objectives: Study of Arabic grammar and syntax, and use of the language in functional contexts. Reading of extra material from articles, newspapers, short stories. Discussions are held in the Arabic language to enhance the students' speaking skills. Coffin Description/Objectives: To develop students' communicating skills in the dialects of the Levant, mainly Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. HEBREW Fall Semester *HEB 101 Elementary Hebrew na, npdf Professor: E. Robbins Description/Objectives: Development of the basic skills of reading, speaking, aural comprehension, and writing. Essential vocabulary and grammar are presented in the textbook and workbook. Hebrew is progressively employed as the classroom language. Short articles, easy texts from Israeli newspaper and discussions about Israel. Its general purpose is to familiarize students with the sounds, letters, basic grammar of Persian language, and basic communication skills. The students will learn to read texts of elementary narrative style paragraphs coherently and with reasonable accuracy, and develop cultural awareness through readings and class discussions. Moinfar-Yazdi Description/Objectives: Persian 105 is designed to introduce students to intermediate level Persian. It stresses oral fluency, written expression, and reading comprehension; supplemented by language lab sessions and audio video aides. It will help the students to read texts of intermediate level difficulty communicate and converse in Persian in everyday situations write intermediate narrative style paragraphs coherently with reasonable accuracy. The classes are conducted mostly in Persian with emphasis on oral drills and conversations.
