Advanced Leader Training Trip (ALTT)
Fall ALTT: TripStore Signup Deadline is Friday, September 28
Written Application Deadline is Saturday, September 29 by 5:00 PM
The Advanced Leader Training Trip (ALTT) is a 4-5 night backpacking trip designed for those OA leaders who have led at least one trip and who want to improve upon their teaching and leadership. The advanced leadership techniques developed during the trip will be applicable both to the wilderness and to other areas of campus life. It will be led by Leader Trainers and take place in a remote wilderness location.
Although the focus will depend on the specific goals of the participants, leadership abilities and soft skills will be slightly emphasized over the teaching of advanced technical skills. Participants will learn to be aware of their own weaknesses (and strengths) and how they can continue to improve upon those in the future.
Complex simulations will challenge participants’ technical, group management, and problem solving abilities; throughout, awareness of one’s own leadership and different leadership styles will be emphasized. There will be significant opportunities to practice debriefing groups both formally and informally.
For the current leaders considering applying to become a leader trainer, the ALTT will serve as a supplementary leadership experience. While it will not count towards the two required outdoor leadership experiences, it will provide prospective candidates with an opportunity to practice the skills necessary to be an effective leader trainer.
The ALTT promises to be a challenging, yet ultimately fun and rewarding trip. Each participant will lead for two full days, providing ample opportunity to improve upon teaching and leadership skills.
Interested OA Leaders should possess a desire to reflect upon and improve their leadership. Interested leaders should submit a brief application available at: ALTT Application and sign up for the trip online at the OA TripStore Applications will be reviewed by the Leader Training Committee and applicants will be notified about their acceptance.
