Visitors often comment, "For such a large
library, Firestone looks rather small." But what you can
see of Firestone from the main entrance is only the tip of the
iceberg. Firestone has
three underground floors, which extend from the chapel to Nassau
Street, and from Washington Road to East Pyne. Firestone houses
more than 70 miles of bookshelves and its study spaces can accommodate
1,850 at a time. At the time of its opening in 1948, Firestone
was the largest open-stack library in the world.
