Chemagination Contest 2003

The Chemagination contest held in conjunction with the 2003 Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM) was a great success. High school chemistry students were invited to write an article as if it were part of the October 2025 issue of ChemMatters magazine, the premier magazine for high school chemistry students. The theme for the article was: "What breakthrough or innovation related to chemistry and/or its applications, will improve the quality of a teenager’s life in the year 2025?" The focus of each article was in one of the four categories:
  • Biotechnology
  • New Materials
  • Medicine/Healthcare
  • Transportation/Environment\
In addition to the article for ChemMatters. The contestents also created table-top displays describing the breakthrough or innovation they had imagined. These were displayed and judged, along with their articles, at the MARM. After a welcome by the contest coordinaton, Sharon Sibilia and the ACS representative from the Office of Community Affairs, Marisa Brugener, the contest began with the judges individually interviewing teams. After the interviews, the participants enjoyed an Orange Key tour of Princeton University, followed by the awards ceremony. The teachers, participants and their families were invited to the the Teacher's Day buffet dinner.

All the entries were of a high standard. Three of the champions from this section of the contest went on to win awards in the National contest! The contestants had the opportunity to meet with students and staff at Princeton University, school teachers and other students from the area, and other industrial and academic attendees at the MARM.
