Abstract

The United Nations will declare 2011 the International year of Chemistry at a ceremony in Paris on January 27 & 28.  On the following Tuesday, February 1, the celebration of IYC 2011 in America will begin in Philadelphia with a week of chemistry-related activities and presentations.   On February 1, Dan Nocera, Andrew Liveris, Ellen Kullman, and others will talk about chemistry and the future of energy.  On February 3, the actor Jim Armstead will be Percy Julian, the African-American chemist, performing for student groups.  On Friday, Chemical Heritage Foundation will open a new exhibit of art based on the periodic table called Elemental Matters.  On Saturday, ACS volunteers will be in the lobby of the Franklin Museum bringing chemistry to everyone who visits Philadelphia’s landmark science museum.

 

Biography

Neil Gussman is the strategic communications and media relations manager for the Chemical Heritage Foundation, a library and museum in Philadelphia.  For the past eight years he has written the column “We’re History” on oddities in the history of chemistry for Chemical Engineering Progress magazine (American Institute of Chemical Engineers), and news articles for Chemical Heritage magazine.  He also reviews books on the history of chemistry and chemical weapons for Books and Culture magazine.

Reservations:

The social mixer begins at 5:30 pm in the Friend Center Convocation Room, Princeton University (located on the street level). The Friend Center is on the corner of William St. and Olden St.  The seminar will begin at 6:15 pm in room 004 (bottom floor) followed by dinner in the Friend Center Convocation Room (see map).  Parking is available in University lots on William St.  The seminar is free and open to the public.  Reservations are required for dinner, which is $20 ($10 for students).  Please contact Louise Lawter (215-428-1475) by January 6 to make or cancel reservations.  You can also register online at www.awisnj.org.  Reservations must be canceled no later than January 11 to avoid being billed for the dinner.
