Driving Directions
ABSTRACT
From the time
that atomic energy was developed into nuclear weapons through
the “Atoms for Peace” initiative focused on non-destructive uses
for atomic energy and materials, the United States was a world
leader in the nuclear industry. In the 1980’s, however,
following the Three Mile Island accident and the cancellation of
almost 100 new nuclear plants, the U.S. reverted to maintaining
the “status quo,” i.e. to running the existing nuclear
generation units and not expanding. Today, the challenges of
climate change have revitalized the nuclear industry worldwide
and other countries are actively pursuing nuclear growth. And,
these countries are, once again, looking to the United States,
to take a leadership role. For the good of our common future, we
must respond.
