Princeton sprint football team
routed by local elementary school

PRINCETON DAY SCHOOL - The casual glance at 8-year-old Katie Gambels does not reveal the athletic poise and ferocity of a star quarterback. If one were to observe her during the course of her day, one would see her tending to her dolls, coloring a happy picture of her family, and perhaps gossiping and spreading cooties amongst the boys. There would be no indication that a fiery will to win burns beneath this façade.

This would be because no such fiery will burns in Gambels, the lackluster quarterback for the Princeton Day School Tiggers. The Tiggers, who had not won a game in the lifetime of anyone on the team, faced off against the Princeton University Tigers sprint football team last Saturday, in the final game of both teams' seasons.

Gambels, together with 2nd-grade 2nd-string wide receiver Chuckie "Wets-His-Pants" Porlane, led the Day School to a stunning, though not entirely unexpected lashing of the University, 45-4.

"We got those big bullies," said Free Safety Timmy "Tattler" Thompson of his team's victory. "Now we can have naptime and cookies. Yay!"

Nose Tackle Cindy Luder echoed the Tattler's sentiments. "Now that those guys are gone, I can finish writing a letter to Santa."

The Day School team clearly had a wish for a win in their heads in the game, as Gambels launched a massive air assault on the University, throwing for three TDs and rushing for another. Porlane caught two of those touchdown throws and made a key block for Running Back Lizzie DeSantis when DeSantis ran 89 yards for a touchdown.

With the score 35-0 with 3:50 to go in the third quarter, the University looked to be making a comeback as Freshman quarterback L.T. Lawler led a drive from his own 14. On the seventh play of the drive, from the Day School 21, junior tailback Christian Gomez hit a hole in the line and ran for what looked like it would be a touchdown, but was hit just before breaking the plane of the goal. He fumbled, and Safety Jimmy "Blitz" Fritz recovered.

On the next play, 1st-grade rookie C.J. Carmallio took a handoff from Gambels and ran it 99 yards for a touchdown and the nail in the University's coffin.

"They ran the ball well and that Gambels kid was on fire today," said Tigers Head Coach Keith Wadsworth, adding that "[the] secondary was unable to match Porlane's speed." Although the loss to the Tiggers, a side the Tigers outweigh by a collective 4840 pounds, put the cap on a winless season, Wadsworth praised his team's "hard work against a superior, although vastly less experienced, team."

Out of pity, Gambels allowed herself to be sacked twice in the end zone to give the University team 4 points. However, there was no question of the Day School's domination throughout the game.

"We came in expecting this game to be like stealing candy from a baby. I guess that's harder than everyone says it is," said freshman QB Dennis Blake.

Blake then attempted to wrestle a lollipop out of the grasp of a passing toddler, only to fail miserably.
