In 1988, Secretary of Defense Frank Carlucci ’52, Princeton President Harold Shapiro *64, Secretary of State George Shultz ’42, and Secretary of the Treasury James Baker ’52 posed next to a plaque of James Madison 1771 at a luncheon in the State Department dining room celebrating the first time in U.S. history that the three ranking cabinet officers were graduates of the same university. Princeton’s tradition of service continues today, as Mitch Daniels ’71, director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Donald Rumsfeld ’54, secretary of defense, serve in President George W. Bush’s cabinet.
