Freshman Class of 1951

The typical SUV that now appears on moving-in day — packed with a dorm room’s worth of accessories, doting parents, and an anxious freshman — is generations away from the experience of students depicted in this 1947 photograph. These nattily dressed young men, identified by archivists only as members of the freshman Class of 1951 on their way from the Dinky train station to campus, are beginning their college careers with a mere two suitcases of belongings each.
