A letter from a reader about Mushing and pet care

December 10, 2005

I am glad the family of Debbie Moderow '77 has found an activity that unites them (cover story, Sept. 14)However, as a person active in animal rescue for the past 15 years, I can't help but wonder how many wonderful, deserving cats and dogs might have been saved from euthanasia in shelters for the $30,000 cost of maintaining the Moderows' team for just one year.  Multiply that by the number of families involved in mushing, plus the years of competition, and a serious dent could have been made in the tragedy of unwanted and abandoned pets, 25 percent of whom are purebreds.

Further, not to be a grinch, but the stories of injury and death to dogs in the Iditarod and other races are true, which is why several prominent sponsors have withdrawn from the Iditarod in particular.
