Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

Between 15 and 30 undergraduate students from around the country will be given the opportunity to perform actual research in materials science and engineering that compliments the ongoing research projects of Princeton Center for Complex Materials scientists.  With the experience in the labs, short courses and lectures, the students are able to explore topics in materials science and engineering in a hands-on way that better prepares them for careers in science and technology.  Faculty open their labs to these students and assign them to work on a specific project for the 9 weeks.  Faculty, staff and graduate students of the labs serve as mentors to the REU students throughout the program.

Time Commitment:
1 hour/week (min.) guidance with student, lab space, office space for 9 weeks

Demographic:  Mostly from schools that do not have strong research programs. REU recruiting specifically targets HBCUs and HSIs to maintain a high percentage of underrepresented minorities. The participation of women in REU is always been at least 50% and in 2009 reached more than 70%.
