The following activity can be used for slower learners who need a more concrete approach to the challenge in Part 4, Activity 1.

Separating Mixtures

What is in the dry mixture?

How will we separate each material?

What did we learn today?___________________________________

Assessment Choices

For use at the end of Part 1, Activity 1:

Separating Mixtures

-Retell what we did in Part 1. Be sure to write in complete sentences. Try to include the following vocabulary words: gravel, diatomaceous earth, sodium chloride, screen, filter, mixture, properties, solution and dissolve. You can include a diagram or illustration to go along with your explanation.

- Complete the Results of Filtering Sheet below and explain how we eventually separated the solution.

- Complete the Sequencing Sheet below and explain how we separated the solution. Be sure to explain why that was the most difficult to separate.

Were you able to separate the saltwater solution?

Explain why or why not_____________________________________

Sequencing Sheet

Put these steps from our experiment in order.

______Talk about mixtures

______Add water to dry material

______Use a screen to separate mixtures

______Discuss results and learn about solutions

______Use a filter to separate mixtures

______Observe and describe materials

Explain what a solution is._________________________
