Accompanied by a student worksheet to be completed while the video is playing. Uses a variety of new vocabulary introduced in our teaching. Short and to the point. A strong understanding of vocabulary is necessary. Therefore, I would recommend this film be used after teaching waves, tides, and currents. The film is appropriate for a 7th grade class; however, 6th grade teachers may find it valuable as a summary of previously taught vocabulary and content.

Discusses the natural resources obtained from the ocean: fish and shellfish; oil and natural gas; drinking water; minerals (salt, gold, cobalt, iron and nickel); tidal energy plants; and transportation. Emphasis on the fragile stability of the oceans, particularly over-fishing, pollution from oil wells and tankers. Continental shelf, seas and four oceans are discussed. People discuss ways to protect species of fish; the future of oil drilling offshore and mining of minerals. Would support the "Effects of an Oil Spill" in the Water on Earth curriculum.

An IMAX movie with great music and footage. Covers marine life below the ocean's surface, unusual creatures, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Coast Guard training, submersibles, scuba diving, surfing…A very general movie that was filmed for entertainment. Suitable for 6th grade and would work well as a science or language lesson (creative writing) with a substitute teacher.
