The ICPSR has a couple of datasets that are useful. (Registration is required to access the data.)
The United Nation Development Programme annually produces its Human Development Report which contains a wealth of social and economic data for all countries. The most recent edition is available here. (Data are available in pdf or Excel format.) Older versions of the published report are also available in pdf format.
The United Nations also has a common database. A number of social and economic indicators are available for various countries and over varying time periods. (Access is restricted to Princeton users only.)
- The Westernization Comparative Panel Dataset, 1975-1995 contains economic, political, and cultural indicators of Westernization for a large selection of countries of the world at three time points: 1975, 1985, and 1995. A second dataset limits the country sample to those with populations of more than one million.
- The Globalization Comparative Panel Dataset, 1975-1995 has economic, political, and cultural indicators of globalization for a large selection of countries at three time points: 1975, 1985, and 1995. A second dataset limits the country sample to those with populations of more than one million.
(Data for both datasets are available in SPSS portable format or as raw data with SPSS and SAS set-up files.)
