Update on Princeton in Asia Fellows (as of Dec.29):

We have been in touch directly or indirectly (through parents and colleagues) with everyone and all the current PiA fellows are okay in the wake of the earthquake and the tsunamis that have severely affected the South Asia and South East Asian regions. We are still concerned about PiA alums and our friends in Asia. If you were in or near affected areas, we would appreciate hearing from you when you have the chance (email: pia@princeton.edu).

Our thoughts are with everyone who is suffering as a result of these catastrophic events. It is horrible to think of regions we love being decimated. The needs in Asia will be acute for a long while to come and PiA is committed to serving the needs of Asia as we have for over a century.

Donations to Relief Efforts and Rebuilding: How Can You Help?

South and South East Asia need immediate help. Relief agencies advise the public to resist the urge to donate clothing and other materials and, to the extent possible, donate cash. Monetary donations give relief teams the flexibility to respond to each community’s unique needs immediately. Organizations that currently host PiA fellows and are supporting the relief effort are:

Additionally, Josh Morris a PiA alumnus who runs a rock-climbing business based in Chiang Mai writes:

“We are currently collecting money here which will be used to help our friends in the south rebuild their climbing shops, buy food, water and clothes. Kat (Josh’s partner) and I will probably go down south in a few days once the initial emergency has been dealt with. Volunteers right now just make it more difficult to deliver care. We will head down to rebuild. If you would like to assist in any way, contact me at jdmorris@alumni.Princeton.EDU. Collected money will buy first aid supplies, clothes, food and water and supplies.”

Donating Blood:

If you are in country in one of the affected countries, there are severe blood shortages. Thailand, for example, is in need of Rh-, A, B, and O blood types which are common foreigner bloodtypes but are rarely found amongst Thai people. Donations can be made through local red cross or hospitals.

A reminder to be vigilant that needles are sealed—particularly in countries with a high incidence of HIV. Depending on where one goes, it may be chaotic with large inflows of injured in affected areas and big shortages of blood. Supplies may be inadequate in many locations and needles will be in high demand. Please exercise particular caution about needles.

As of December 28th, however, the American Red Cross cannot facilitate stateside blood donations for South Asia.
