The Program in Latin American Studies (PLAS) promotes the interdisciplinary study of the cultures, socioeconomic conditions, politics and societies of Latin America and the Caribbean. PLAS offers courses through the following cooperating departments: anthropology, art and archaeology, ecology and evolutionary ecology, economics, French and Italian, history, politics, sociology, and Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures, and through the Program in Latin American Studies. The program awards an undergraduate certificate in partnership with an academic department, offers competitive undergraduate research grants, and supports student internships throughout the region. Although there is no graduate degree program in Latin American Studies, graduate students participate actively in the program’s wide-ranging public lectures, conferences and cultural activities. Additionally, PLAS offers small grants on a competitive basis to qualified students for field research in Latin America and the Caribbean related to their graduate studies, and supports scholarly meetings organized by affiliated graduate students.
