The
Institute
for the Transregional Study of the Contemporary Middle
East, North Africa, and Central Asia was founded
in 1994 with funding from H.H. Moulay Hicham Benabdallah
of Morocco. Primarily a research institute, it is dedicated
to the comparative study of key issues for the region.
Its main focuses are development, the impact of the
world market on the economies and societies of the region,
forms of governance, democratization, human rights,
and cultural dialogue with Europe and the U.S. Each
year the institute brings to Princeton a distinguished
visiting professor to teach in these areas, as well
as research fellows. It also sponsors conferences that
bring together international scholars, journalists,
and public figures to discuss the problems of the region.
