With your help and your vote, I will work hard as your President to make a difference now and for the future.

 Mike

I offer leadership, experience, knowledge, and trustworthiness as President of Princeton Model Congress. My life’s experience has given me a powerful time tested leadership philosophy. In terms of experience, I am a strong leader because I’m engaging, actively involved, self-motivated, and committed to success. I believe that a leader builds a team, facilitates that team in accomplishing a central goal, and allows each member of that team to have a sense of pride and ownership in their work. Fundamentally, I believe the leader is not the “boss,” but the person who has the responsibility of making the tough choices decisively, being forthright, honest, and always remembers that his actions directly affect the people he leads. Congress and the President are a team; they work with each other to accomplish the greatest good for the greatest number of people. I pledge to be committed to every member of Princeton Model Congress, take the time to visit every committee, work with anyone who needs my help with their legislation, and be open to any discussion on any issue.

There are many tough issues facing America today and I’m not afraid to tackle any of them. I believe that education is the silver bullet to solving our nation’s most dire issues and an investment that can only produce favorable returns. Every child in America, regardless of his or her socio-economic status, is entitled to quality education, a safe environment, and the opportunity to go to college. I pledge to fight for better education funding, teacher training, teacher recruitment programs, and to make college tuition 100% tax deductible.  School vouchers, affirmative action, un-funded mandates to the states, and other band-aid programs have failed, are discriminatory, and hurt more than they help and I oppose them.

Another major issue is America’s ongoing oil crisis. America consumes 18 million barrels of petroleum each day and as a result, it dumps tons of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Furthermore, our petroleum addiction forces us to prop up tyrannical regimes in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, spend billions of dollars defending our oil stockpiles, and forces the United States to consider defiling it’s natural treasures in the name of oil. I support incentives for investment in vast untapped West African Oil stockpiles to bring the United States’ attention out of the Middle East. To lower the US demand for petroleum and its negative effects, America needs tougher emissions standards for all new cars, major tax breaks for hybrid cars, alternative fuel developers, and incentives to promote development of clean burning “Soy Diesel,” which will also revitalize America’s heartland economy.  This would also lower oil prices and the price of gasoline would drop too, leaving more money in the American people’s pocket.

I take a proactive, not reactive stance on the issues. I pledge to defend women’s issues; support laws that fight hate crimes and other discrimination; fight to keep guns out of the hands of felons, violent criminals, and domestic abusers; defend our natural treasures; unrelentingly fight the war on terror with a global collation of allies; and be sure that every child in America has healthcare insurance. Through partnership and dedication to PMC, I believe that we can achieve the noble goals of improving the quality of life for millions of Americans, protecting our families from terrorist acts, saving our natural resources, helping the farmers that feed the world, and bring job educational opportunities to those who need them. Together as a team, we face the controversies confronting America; together we can be sure that America leads the world in the twenty first century.

Charlie

We, as a nation, need a vision, a plan. It is time that we were offered original ideas, rather than poll tested sound bytes.  In the tradition of FDR’s New Deal and LBJ’s Greater Society, I present to you The Agenda.  The Agenda is a bold plan for social, economic and political justice.  It protects and extends the rights that we value so strongly.  It accomplishes this admittedly abstract goal by implementing the following policies.

The first goal of the Agenda will be to put the power back in the hands of the people by extending their political rights.  The Agenda includes three elements to accomplish this goal; a bill allowing for national voter initiatives, one supporting clean (or government funded) elections and another that aims to place a “none of the above” check box on ballots across the nation.  If such a checkbox garners the majority of the votes in an election, the election must be run again with new candidates.

Secondly, the Agenda will strengthen our economic rights.  Under this plan the minimum wage would be raised to $10/hr and a national job-training program would be introduced.  In addition, globalization would be made fair for everyone.  American corporations will be strongly discouraged from moving factories to other countries and penalties paid by companies who do choose to move their plants will be used to create a transition fund for the affected community.  Additionally, universal healthcare will become a reality; this will be achieved by opening up the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program to all Americans.  The Agenda will also create 250,000 new homes for Americans each year.  In addition, welfare will be reformed so that recipients will truly be able to improve their situation.  States will count education towards work requirements and will be provided with sufficient funds to provide job-counseling services.

The third element of the Agenda is a national education program for this country’s poorest performing schools.  Instead of being forced to turn their schools over to private corporations, states will be allowed to turn their schools over to the federal government at which point the schools will be infused with a total of $210 billion.  This will go towards hiring millions of new teachers, providing better access to technology, setting up after school programs and investing in newer buildings.  These schools would also be provided with an optional curriculum that stresses diversity and includes a strong emphasis on civic participation and American government.

Fourth, social liberty is recognized as an issue of high importance.  Military service and marriage will be open to those of all sexualities, women will be guaranteed the right to choose and doctor assisted suicide will be legalized everywhere.  In addition marijuana and prostitution will be permitted and heavily taxed. These extensions of our social liberties run parallel to the spirit of American democracy.

The Agenda includes many other programs, but there is not enough space on this one page to fully explain them all.  Suffice it to say that the Agenda will also increase funding for grants in the arts and sciences, remove harmful gasses from our atmosphere and wean us off of fossil fuels by 2010.  The Agenda represents a bold step towards securing the political, economic and social rights of citizens in this country.  I ask you today to take that step with me.
