PALESTINE / ISRAEL:

PROPOSAL (Todd) to make this issue more of a focus within PPN
No objections  However...many express concern over potential of PPN alienating individuals.
Group discussion over a general reluctance to discuss this issue within the US. Suresh expresses the importance of PPN denouncing violence
on both sides, but he feels that PPN should raise awareness over one-sidedness of power (in hands of the Israelis) over this issue. Lee
feels there needs to be a voice to counter much of the one-sided pro-Israeli sentiments found in much of the US media.

Todd suggests contacting Richard Falk (sometime in future) to speak about this issue.

Someone suggests coordinating PPN efforts with those of the Muslim Student Association (Taufiq) and the Arab Society (Sally)

Jolie suggests there be some type of protest this week (in conjuction with issuing the PPN statement drafted by Todd). Perhaps a
die-in outside of Frist.

PROPOSAL (Todd) to create a working group to organize event this week and to contact Muslim Student Association and Arab Society
AMENDMENT (Jolie) to empower working group to make decisions without consulting others outside of working group (reasons: need for fast action - want an event this week - there will not be another PPN group before this event)
APPROVED
CONTACT (for working group) = Lee Worden (wor-@eno.princeton.edu)

IRAQ -

Susan expresses need for education on political climate leading up to Persian Gulf War
Someone proposes putting information on the website Perhaps having a sample letter that people can send in.

PROPOSAL to have an emergency protest in the event that US extends War on Terrorism into Iraq
Protest should be 24 hours after first bombing in order to allow enough time for mobilization for successful protest
Concern that no-one will be here (due to Univ winter break) to organize and coordinate protest
Proposal recommended, but still needs a volunteer who will be in town

Someone suggests a letter writing campaign

PROPOSAL (Suresh) that PPN issue a statement this week
No objections  Suresh volunteers to write a sample letter that will be brought to films this week so  people can sign, stamp and mail it to thier representatives (Todd will bring letter on Israel-Palestine issue to the films also)

WEBMASTER -

PPN needs a new one.
CONTACT: Susan Schweinsberg <sschweinsberg@molbio.princeton.edu>

PEACE EXHIBIT - "Gandhi, King, Ikeda: A Legacy of Building Peace" -

Skye would like to bring a peace exhibit - focusing on lives of Gandhi, King and Ikeda to Princeton University - and asks for endorsement of
PPN in order to get a room to show the exhibit Would like to show the exhibit the second week of February in Multipurpose Room B of Frist

PROPOSAL (Suresh) to cosponsor event - to get space for exhibit and to help advertise
APPROVED
CONTACT (for exhibit) Skye Flusser -

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY EVENT -

Suggestion to publicize one of his speeches (previously circulated to PPN list via email)
Suggestion to coordinate efforts with Jean who is working with People's Organization for Progress

PROPOSAL (Curtis - who did not attend - voiced by Suresh) that PPN organize a peace/non- violence event commemorating

ML King day on Jan. 18 in Palmer Square, Princeton.

ACCEPTED
Details will be worked out at the next PPN meeting on Sunday, January 6, 2002.
TEMPORARY CONTACT = Suresh Paul <SureshPaul@aol>

DOCUMENTATION OF PPN EVENTS -

PROPOSAL - (Zia - who did not attend - voiced by Suresh)
Zia recommended that all those involved with PPN use the
next couple of weeks to individually document --
(record, collect flyers of all events, published material (letters
to the editor; op-eds; etc.), PPN minutes, Advertisements -- what PPN has
done since September 11, and to reflect on our
participation within PPN. It will be valuable to
maintain a good documentation of PPN activities/events to acknowledge the
presence of an anti-war peace movement in Princeton; and to help
each one of us understand the importance of our involvement
(sharing & learning) in PPN.
APPROVED
Please bring any information you have on previous PPN events
to the meeting on January 6th. A working group will be
created at that meeting.

MONTHLY POTLUCKS -

PROPOSAL - (Sharon and Matt - who were not at the meeting - voiced
by third party)
that the monthly potlucks include some type of musical
event, poetry, readings, etc...
APPROVED

PALESTINE/ISRAEL ; IRAQ ; AFGHANISTAN AWARENESS WEEKS -

PROPOSAL - (Suresh) that PPN focus in depth each week in February on

three issues that US foreign policy has adversely affected in the
Middle East
- Palestine/Israel-- Iraq--Afghanistan. A week of events (on
each of these
countries) through films, lectures, panel discussions and a
detailed booklet
of facts and figures (eg. teach-in material) exploring a range of
complex
issues.
APPROVED
CONTACT = Suresh Paul <sureshpaul@aol>
Needs volunteers to be part of a working group.

ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE ANTHOLOGY TOUR -

An outside group called Another World is Possible contacted PPN
about bringing their peace movement (peace activist speakers) to Princeton.
Another World (the Princeton group) will discuss this at their next
meeting, because being an undergraduate group they have greater access to
university money than does PPN (a graduate student group)

NEXT MEETING -

PROPOSAL - to have next meeting on Sunday, January 6th, at 7:30pm in
Murray-Dodge
unless someone would like to call a meeting before then
(please feel free to do so)
APPROVED

--The World Citizen Potluck organized by Sharon will take place on December 8th, 7pm at the Arts Council of Princeton. Contact Sharon at 392-5855 for more information or if you can volunteer to help set up beforehand.

--Todd P. reported on the work of the anti-racism/racial profiling working group, which is working on a draft letter to Princeton President Shirley Tilghman expressing concern about the FBI's nationwide investigation of students of Middle E astern students. The letter will urge Princeton not to cooperate with unwarranted requests for information about foreig n students at Princeton. A copy of the letter will circulate via email and should be finalized by Tuesday. The next me eting of the working group will be this Monday. For more information, contact Todd (parsons@math.toronto.).

--Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, will be visiting the Princeton campus this Thursday. The group disc ussed a response to the visit, and decided to request a permit for a protest/flyering at the event. Information on the s peech is here:

Thanks to the James Madison Program at Princeton University, Lynne Cheney will be speaking on Patriotism and Civic Educ ation at 4:15 PM on Thursday, November 29th, in the Princeton lecture hall known as McCosh 50. The public announcement will not be made unt il Wednesday, November 28th, but you can obtain free tickets now if you contact Seana Sugrue at ssugrue@ t o get on the list. Please act quickly (no later than Tuesday, November 27th) because seats are limited and no one will be admitted without a ticket. Don't miss this opportunity.

Mrs. Cheney has been in the news lately for her role as a founding member of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA), "a conservative nonprofit group devoted to curbing liberal tendencies in academia." The group just published a report titled "Defending Civilization: How Our Universities Are Failing America and What Can Be Done About It," which s ociologist Todd Gitlin has called "a record-breaking event in the annals of shoddy scholarship," adding, "it's a hodgepo dge of erratically gathered quotations, few of which are declarations of heartfelt opposition to American foreign policy ."

--A draft statement on "Where does PPN go from here," put together by Todd, Suresh, and Matt was circulated and received positive feedback. A copy of the statement is attached below.

--Future events, plans, etc.:
--Concern was voiced that the "war on terror" might expand to Iraq or other countries and that the group should be in a position to respond.
--Todd suggested possibly asking Richard Falk to speak or host a panel on the Iraqi sanctions regime, arms inspe ctions, etc.
--Peter suggested writing letters to Congress, and is investigating possibility of meeting with Rush Holt to voi ce concerns about possible expansion of war.

Draft Statement:

Where to from here?
PPN Draft statement to facilitate discussion & decision making into the future.

Now more than ever, it is pertinent to nurture the existence of an anti-war movement in Princeton that will honestly question and challenge any US foreign policy which may perpetrate human rights violations against peoples of other nations through military interventions, covert CIA operations and the promotion of arms trade to governments that use them on innocent civilians.

In the aftermath of the horrible attacks on September 11, PPN plunged in to explore peaceful, non-violent, alternatives to military intervention and the culture of war, besides offering relevant critical analysis of US foreign policy in the Middle East. While continuing to educate ourselves on the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, we need to work toward efforts that can inspire the US government to avoid expanding the "war on terrorism" by using it as a veil to justify military interventions around the world, with the support of draconian laws and rhetoric.

In the light of recent developments in the United States' "War on Terrorism," PPN is challenged to focus on the following priorities:

* To continue exploring non-violent alternatives to war.!
* To encourage the United Nations to diligently pursue the creation of a viable civil society for the peoples of Afghanistan; and reminding the US government of its responsibility and accountability to support UN efforts in Afghanistan.
* To continue to explore this "war on terrorism," as a continuation of US "cold war" foreign policy which ruthlessly advocates US hegemony and imperialism around the world, particularly against economically poor Third World countries. We must also oppose any future unilateral US military interventions, and question the economic dimension/repercussions of policies that are inspired by a military ideology.
* To continue to encourage educational initiatives and dialogue toward the creation of an ethical dimension in US foreign policy in the Middle East (and around the world), particularly focusing on Afghanistan; Iraq; Israel & Palestine, besides our support to authoritarian systems in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt..
* To oppose authoritarian laws and policies in the United States that curb the civil liberties of not just US citizens, but also immigrants, particularly friends from the Middle East and South Asia. We must also oppose racial profiling; the formation of military tribunals that stifles the process of law; and any new policies that may curtail our civil rights.

Educational plans· Tabling· Film series· Lecture & panel discussions· Teach-ins; e.mail alternative media sources; pamphlets & fliers; advertisements.

Action oriented plans· Letters & Op-eds· Peace / Protest rally· Potluck & community events that nurture..· Communicating with Political leaders.need for accountability.

Suresh: still in crisis, don't let go of issues because the bombing has stopped. We must continue educational component of PPN. Endorses l ee's suggestion to show RAWA film. Will be important to set priorities we have already had a very strong anti militarization message. Rumsfeld & Bush have said this war is far from over. Continue to pursue the larger dimension of politics in the middle east.

General discussion:

Perhaps should contact individuals who have come to, say, one meeting and ask what want for future PPN events. At action nite Wed.

Remark: possibly need outreach to Af.rican American or Hispanic American communities?
Possibly reach out through Churches.

Announcement/outreach: Frist, tomorrow 7:30 pm week without violence meeting. Discussion about race relations.

Concern: particular student constituencies that would expect to show up at events have not shown up. Idea: send liasons to Arab student league, south asian student groups, etc.

List of student groups to be brought to the Wed. meeting

Wed. night: possibly type up or scan print only articles for posting on web

Issue: # of people leafletting restricted last Friday. Issue: University sponsored talk at which ability to ask questions was politically biased.

Possible idea: notify university that feel restrictions are unjust Regulations to be obtained, advice of civil liberties lawyer, to be brought to group

Possible ideas: document previous incidents, comparative study of situation at other universities.

LETTER WRITING
Urgent need for Bush, Princeton Packet

Earth flags to be brought on Wed.

Wednesday, October 3rd

Notes from Oct. 3 PPN meeting at 6:30 in Murray Dodge

Patricia moderated the meeting

1) Separating planning meetings from action meetings

It was generally agreed that the two kinds of meetings should be separated and advertised as separate since many people want to engage in actions but don't want to sit through planning meetings.

AGREED: PPN will hold planning meetings weekly on Monday nights at 7 and action meetings weekly on Wednesday at 7:30.

Meetings will be held in Murray Dodge or elsewhere as need and availability dictate.

2) Cindy announced that the Woodrow Wilson School organization called "Students Promoting Civil Rights" (not exclusive to WWS students) has been formed to educate the community about civil rights issues and to promote policy that protects civil rights. The group is sponsoring a panel of journalists on Nov. 19 to speak about the media.

WWS can also pay for speakers (i.e. travel, accommodation, incidentals) that PPN wants to propose. We would need to provide bio of speaker and explanation of her/his importance in the context of the WWS's areas of concern.

AGREED: PPN will not have its own separate civil rights group since we would be duplicating the WWS group and we can work with them to achieve our civil rights goals.

3) Discussion of Working Group Structure Proposal was tabled due to time constraints.

4) Vigil

Lucia handed around flyers/ads for the Sunday night vigil for comment and suggestions. Only minor changes were suggested. Patricia volunteered to reproduce flyers.

It was agreed that PPN could spend about $250 to cover expenses of advertising.

Tentative program:

--Zia will give an intro.

--Suresh will read something from Ghandi

--Someone is still needed to read a text from ML King

--Susan will play music

Discussion followed about whether to include representatives of different religious communities in the program but it was agreed that we would not. The issue of discrimination/hostility toward members of minority ethnic/religious groups can be addressed by the choice of an appropriate text from Dr. King.

5) Response to upcoming PCAT rally

The question was whether PPN should have a presence at PCAT's event and, if so, what kind and with what goal.

AGREED: Individuals can go to PCAT rally to observe and report back to group about PCAT's presentation (but not too many, as we don't want to make their rally look larger than it otherwise would) but PPN will not dignify PCAT with an organized response since that would appear to confer a certain legitimacy on them. Flyers for PPN's vigil will be posted around the site where PCAT's event will be held, so any journalists present will see that PPN is actively representing another view. PPN members will also continue to announce our presence by writing letters to editors of local papers.

6) Emergency Rally Plan

On the morning of the day when any military strike occurs, PPN members will meet in Rm. 216 of the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies (behind Wild Oats in engineering building).

Material is ready to hand out about rally and signs are ready to use at the event.

Volunteers are needed to show up on the morning of the rally and leaflet campus. Others are needed to distribute flyers beforehand.

The meeting adjourned at 7:50 so we could attend the films in McCosh.

Sunday, September 30th

For those who don't know, the Princeton Peace Network is still actively planning events and seeking help. In fact, we have likely only just begun. If you haven't been to a meeting for awhile, please come to our

NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY 6:30pm MURRAY-DODGE BASEMENT

We will be finished by 8, in time for our film screenings in McCosh 28. Most of what will be discussed at the next meeting will follow from the minutes from last night's meeting, whose minutes follow. However, if you have new business you want added to the agenda, please email Lee (worden@) or just come announce it at the start of the meeting.

The minutes are organized by working group, with the most immediate events listed first. If you have any time and effort to spare, and want to help out, please contact the people whose names are given under each working group heading.

################################
This Weeks Events
################################

We have a full schedule of events for this week. These include:

films followed by open discussion today through Thursday All screenings are at 8pm in McCosh 28

################################
Emergency Response Plan (cdeutsch@)
################################

Relatively reliable sources (BBC,CNN) have indicated that a military strike may occur in the next couple days. We have implemented a plan to hold a mass rally in response. In the event of a US military action, we are calling for all people who oppose war to meet for an emergency rally in Cannon Green (on campus). Most of the details have been worked out, but we need lots of help from everyone to GET OUT THIS MESSAGE:

-------------------------

The Princeton Peace Network is calling on all people who oppose war to come together in the event of a US military attack, for an emergency rally at Cannon Green (behind Nassau Hall on the Princeton University Campus). We will begin gathering at 11:30am on the first day of the US military attack on Afghanistan, which now appears imminent. If reports of attacks are broadcast after 11:30am, we will hold the rally on the following day. A confirmation email will be initiated on the morning before the plan is enacted. Please help spread the word.

Princeton Peace Network is a coalition of concerned members of the University and the larger Princeton community. Our goal with this rally is to send a timely and visual message that this war may not be conducted in our name.

For more information, please contact

ppnet@linuxfreemail.com or
cdeutsch@ (497-4757) (or substitute your own name)
-------------------------

Please begin by emailing the above to everyone you know (department mailing lists, student organizations, etc.) Also call people who don't use email and let them know of this plan.

We will have one huge banner ("No War") and signs for everyone to hold ("not in my name"), and letters expressing this theme, for all comers to sign and send to senators/congresspeople.

WE NEED:

People to leaflet on campus from 9am until the rally.
People to contact their friends, neighbors, churches, etc. to tell them the plan
Suggestions for specific groups to contact/ venues for advertising/outreach

Email me (cdeutsch@) if you can help with these things, or with any suggestions.

################################
National Day of Action Oct. 7
################################

We decided to hold a large event of some kind in Princeton on Oct 7, in sync with other campuses across the country. Possibilities are great, and huge amounts of help will be needed to pull it off. Please contact Lucia (lmelgar@) to join the working group and contribute. This effort is going to require fast mobilization so contact her now!

################################
Anti-Racism (worden@)
################################

Lee and Asli visited the Islamic center and Sikh temple in the area to extend help; the people at the Islamic center said they currently aren't asking for help; the people at the Sikh temple would like to meet with people who are interested in helping out. Lee is trying to set up a meeting on campus Thursday at 7pm. Let him know if you'd like to attend.

Discussed sending people to work with area high schools on combating domestic backlash.

Tuesday, September 25th

Next Meeting: Sunday, September 30th at 7pm in Murray Dodge.

A. Agenda setting. Todd volunteered to facilitate discussion.

B. Everyone introduced themselves.

C. History of PPN. Lee volunteered to provide. We are less than two weeks old-had our first meeting on Friday, September 14th. We spent most of our time discussing our commonalities and consensusing on the need for a public Rally, which happened last Friday, September, 21st. Our common position seems to be that we oppose war, particularly the impetuous, massive one forwarded by many in the U.S. over the past week. We also oppose the domestic backlash to people perceived to be "terrorists." We are an international group; and use the slogan "world citizen" and a planet to highlight our broad base. Now we are trying to determine what to do next-all are invited to join in our campaign.

D. Mechanics of the consensus process. Todd provided a brief overview of how we prefer to hold our discussions and make decisions.

E. Report from working groups. The following are a list of proposed next actions:

1. Commemorate Gandhi's birthday (Oct 2). Contact Zia at zia@ for more info.

2. Nonviolent film festival: idea is to show films that document the effects of the sanctions on Iraq, Palestinian-Israeli conflict, etc. Contact Amy Hughes at amy.hughes@hotmail

3. Teach-in on American involvement in Middle East: may focus on bringing people from off-campus as specialists. Contact Curtis at cdeutsch@

4. Performance and/or photo exhibit: Middle East dance troupe has been contacted by Zeynep. Many local artists have expressed interest in performing. School of Architect has been talking about a photo exhibit and has appropriate space as well as expertise in presentation. Paula Chow of International Center may also know of a student interested in a photo exhibit. M.I.T. put a long piece of paper up in a public space on their campus for people to express themselves, either pro or against any policy or war. Princeton Arts Council many also be interested. Contact Amy Hughes at amy.hughes@hotmail

5. Emergency plan on the event of a U.S. strike: In the event of a U.S. strike, we will gather at 11:30pm on Cannon Green and carpools will depart for Trenton Statehouse at 12:15pm for an informal rally. Contact Curtis at cdeutsch@

6. Joint event with local chapter of Peace Action, targeted to off-campus community. There is some concern over this possibility, as they started off their Rally last week with a statement of support for President Bush-is this unconditional support? An event was suggested but still in need of leadership.

7. Small group, precept-like discussions in various venues (eating clubs, dorms, study breaks, student clubs, etc). These will not be teach-ins, but we would like to encourage informed discussion. We will put teams of facilitators together; those interested are asked to self-select based upon knowledge of issues that arise from the Sept 11 attacks. Contact Amy Shuster at ashuster@

8. Anti-racism/xenophobia educational outreach to local high school: recently a group of N.J. youth attacked a 68-yr old Sikh man. Contact Lee at worden@

9. Liaison with Rutgers University and other national student groups: Asli at asli@

10. Coalition for Peace Action liaison: Asli at asli@

11. Leaflet Tilghman installation this Friday: the Board of Trustees will be on-campus all day Friday. Carpenter will also perform in the evening. We do not want to go overboard and create a negative atmosphere-especially because we do not want any action to be misunderstood as opposition to Tilghman's presidency-we like her!!

12. Poster or ribbon campaign: could be phrases, facts, remarks to get people thinking. We have ribbons for distribution. Some feel like there are only a few people on-campus that are concerned about an impending war, a publicly displayed symbol might help curb these feels of isolation. There is also a symbolic competition going on for the legitimate use of public space. We need to be a positive part of this: create a situation where someone asks you about what you are wearing and the opportunity for personal connections and increased, civil discussions. Perhaps print up pins or bumper stickers. We could buy ads in the local newspapers and provide alternative, more inclusive images. Use of the green planet image developed by WWS students was also suggested. Some were still concerned that this would be too aggressive and divisive, especially since it would seem to be a critique of the recent use of the U.S. flag. One participant said that the US flag could also be a symbol of the blessing s of the U.S.; this is where we live and what we are part of-part of making it a better place. This still needs leadership.

13. Other town meetings: Recently a group of students calling themselves the Princeton Committee Against Terrorism went to local govt meetings representing the Princeton campus. We should provide a counter-point to their position. Rep. Holt was there, and his opinion and Congressional vote is important since he seems to be on the borderline.

14. Media wing: write press releases, set up a fax system. We made the front page of the Princeton Packet. Contact Todd at parsons@math.utoronto

15. Develop a position statement: We have been able to consense on three items, featured on the front of the pamphlet used at the Rally. We can use these as a starting point: against the rising intolerance in the U.S., against military intervention, support for a more just U.S. foreign policy. WE might think of taking out one phrase or line for people to remember. Contact Jonathan

16. Nuts and Bolts: setting meeting times, arranging facilities, collecting agenda items: contact Lee at worden@

17. Anti-racism/xenophobia working group: to help set up escorts for vulnerable populations. The Student Volunteer Council is having a meeting on Thursday at 7pm to set up escorts. There have already been several people and orgs on-campus targeted with violence. Contact Lee at worden@

18. Legislation watch: document and publicize the compromises and suspensions of civil rights in U.S. There are many legal immigrants, not just US citizens, that deserve the protection of the constitution. Need to be watchful of the abuses by the govt. Need a letter-writing campaign; ACLU has a sample letter on their website. Jidan in the WWS student group is also working on this, we should contact her. Contact Sue at sschweinsberg@molbio.princeton

19. Phone tree, for use at short-term, emergency actions and for those that do not have email. This still needs leadership.

20. Finances: we now have money from donations given at the Rally. Need someone to take this and handle budget. Contact Sally at selsedak@

21. Information clearinghouse: Webpage people should contact him. Contact Beau at bmount@

22. Iraq: Continued need for education on effects of sanctions Contact Suresh at ??

23. Inter-campus coordinating: contact Asli at asli@

24. YWCA festival: on Oct 14th from 2-6pm. Tables are easy to get. Call Christine at the YWCA to get us registered. Lots of people from the community will be there, we should be presented and publicize our events/concerns: letter-writing, literature distribution, petition signing.

25. Talk with Tilghman about our concerns re: Justice Dept and legislation that would try to access student records. This was referred to the Legislation group.
