Minutes from PPN meeting on Sunday June 8th, 2003

Moderated by Ram. Notes by Peter.

  • - Ann-Marie brought up an e-mail from bob Witanak about a teach-in on the Iraq occupation. Bob is involved in an effort to start a new anti-occupation group- their next meeting will be June 22nd in Rocky hill. This will include a slide show on the Iraq occupation. Question- do we want to have this slide show on campus? Ann-Marie will attend the slide show and report back at the next meeting about it's effectiveness and content.
  • Ram brought up the idea of showing a ~10 min video from the ANSWER coalition on mass media coverage vs. reality. Perhaps this could be part of another event?
  • The 6/8/03 NY Times has an interesting editorial on the lack of WMD in Iraq.
  • No on at the meeting knows exactly what the current state of outreach/contact is between PPN and other grad student groups. Perhaps we need to work on making more contact with friendly groups. Also, those with information on the topic should share it.
  • We hope to show the film "Beyond Rangoon" on June 27th. Need to contact Dhaval about whether he has found a copy. We need suggestions for other films as well- please bring your suggestions to the next PPN meeting. We will plan to do publicity by flyering before the film showing.
  • July 2nd- CFPA "Peace is Patriotic" event at Borough Hall in Princeton at ~6 pm.
  • July 4th in Philly there is an ANSWER coalition protest at the opening of the new Constitution center- Bush has been invited to attend the opening.
  • Kumar reported on collection boxes in undergrad dorms. We were able to connect with the group "Home Front" though Jean Ross and they aceepeted the collected items (two car loads). They seemed happy to have them - thanks to everyone who helped.
  • A bill is in Congress- HCR 111- which deals with Rachel Corey. She was a US citizen working in the west Bank as a human shiled and was killed by an Israeli bulldozer. HCR 111 was introduced to offer condolences to her family and mandates an investigation into her death. Can we work to get letters sent to Rush Holt to sign on as a co-sponsor? Maybe we can have a letters table at the July 2nd CFPA event?
  • we brainstormed ideas for grad student recruiting over the summer- maybe have a peace cafe at the GC or Butler? Maybe plan join events with other groups? In the fall we need to get a table at the activities fair to recruit more undergrads.
  • Next meeting in 2 weeks- June 22nd.

Minutes from PPN meeting on Sunday May 25th, 2003

Notes taken by Kumar

In attendance: Anne-Marie, Damon, Dhaval, Hana, Jean, Kumar, Suresh, Zia

Items discussed:

1. Collection drive: We had quite a large collection of mostly used but also some new items. The items were sorted during the meeting and the current question is where exactly to donate the stuff. Jean mentioned that the Trenton Rescue Mission only wants new items. Jean said she would contact Woman Space, and a couple other places. Anyone with any insights regarding what to do with used items (half-filled bottles of shampoo, etc.) should contact Kumar (ramank@princeton.edu). The sooner the better: the items are currently occupying Kumar's office.

2. Dishonorary Degrees: Dhaval showed a "Bachelor of Tyranny" certificate that he made to be mailed to the honorees. The personnel that are working on that project should contact him.

3. Doing something during reunions: A number of people indicated a general willingness to help but it was noted that time is running out unless someone is willing to assume control of this project. Please email the list if you are interested in taking charge.

4. FCC deregulation: Suresh mentioned an upcoming vote (June 2) in Congress regarding further deregulation of the FCC. He suggested taking action in the form of writing Congress. Here are some articles on the issue which he sent in a previous mailing.

5. Rachel Corrie: Kumar mentioned a bill introduced by her Congressman (Baird) and sponsored by a handful of others giving official condolence to Rachel's parents as well as demanding an investigation:
http://capwiz.com/adc/issues/alert/?alertid=1795771
Kumar suggested a letter-writing campaign to get Rush Holt to sign on. The bill is currently dead due to lack of interest.

6. Meetings: Suresh thinks we should meet next week to discuss some long term issues while everyone is still around: (1) When and how often to meet during the summer months; (2) Planning a film series early in the fall to attract new members; (3) Decide on a list of speakers for the next year. Please think about these issues before the next meeting.

Minutes from PPN meeting on Sunday May 18th, 2003

Minutes by Hana Heineken

1. Emergency Kit Boxes 3. Dis-honorary Degree
4. Reunions Weekend: May 29 ~ 31
5. Announcements

1. Emergency Kit Boxes
There are now a total of 6 boxes around the residential colleges and in the Frist Campus Center. We are aiming to collect various items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and band-aid (more details found on the box), which we will then compile into Emergency Kits. The boxes will be situated next to other boxes sponsored by the Student Volunteer Council, and they will be effective until this Saturday, May 23rd. Please donate anything you can, even used items. The kits will probably not be sent to Iraq, but will be used to address other Emergencies situations.

2. Manufacturing Consent: May 21rst, Wednesday @ 7pm (McCosh 46? undecided)
Funny, provocative and surprisingly accessible, Manufacturing Consent explores the political life and ideas of Noam Chomsky, world-renowned linguist, intellectual and political activist. In a dynamic collage of new and original footage, biography, archival gems, imaginative graphics and outrageous illustrations, the film highlights Chomsky's probing analysis of mass media. A mammoth, two-part project, Manufacturing Consent is nonetheless light on its feet, favoring a style that encourages viewers to question its own workings, as Chomsky himself encourages his listeners to extricate themselves from this "web of deceit" by undertaking a course of "intellectual self-defense."

Appearing in the film are major journalists and critics, including Bill Moyers, William F. Buckley, Jr., Tom Wolfe, Peter Jennings, philosopher Michel Foucault, Nightline producer Jeff Greenfield, White House reporter Sarah McClendon, New York Times editorial writer Karl E. Meyer and revisionist author Robert Faurisson. "Eye-opening, mind-expanding entertainment at its finest. A major achievement." - Hollywood Reporter "MEMORABLE...INVALUABLE"
-The Nation

Help with fliering needed.

Meeting tomorrow (May 19) 7pm at the Carl Fields Center. Come help make a draft of the dis-honorary degree flier. Current suspects include Rumsfeld, Perle, and Shultz, but suggestions are welcomed. Contact ahughes@ for questions.

4. PPN and Reunions Weekend: in the works
We are planning an informal get together on May 30th at the Murray Dodge Cafe. The purpose is to get the alumni informed / interested / and maybe involved in the progressive events on campus. We are looking for more groups to get involved. Contact ahughes@ if you have any suggestions.

Minutes from PPN meeting on Sunday April 27th, 2003

meeting facilitated by Peter Wolanin
notes by Dhaval Patel

  • A new flyer was presented to the group.  It has not been finalized yet, however.  Please ask Peter Wolanin if you would like to see it and make suggestions ( pwolanin@).  The seminary flyer was also presented and ready for distribution.
  • PPN, Another World Is Possible, and CFPA plan to sponsor a high school dialogue group to be held at Murray-Dodge on May 9, 2003 at 8pm to 10pm.  We need people to help with the dialogue.  Please contact Sue Albert (salbert@ or 609.577.7053) if interested.
  • CFPA is sponsoring a Day of Unity with Peace Groups in South Asia on Saturday, May 10, 2003 from 2pm to 4pm.  This will include speakers, dances, food, etc.  Please contact Karen Mazzola (karenmazzola_at_yahoo) for more information or call 609.924.5022.
  • On May 16, 2003, CFPA will also have it's annual dinner with Robert Jensen.  Amy and Curtis will receive honors bestowed upon PPN by CFPA for all of their hard work.
  • The Robert Jensen workshop on bringing radical ideas to the mainstream press is scheduled for Saturday May 17 from 10-2 at 221 Nassau Street (the Program of Science and Global Security's conference room).  Space is limited, and if you would like more information, please contact Karen Mazzola (karenmazzola_at_yahoo).
  • Discussion was also underway to send an email or flyer to Princeton alumni requesting money for PPN and other types of support.
  • An update on the Dishonorary Degree:  A mock committee consisting of students, professors, and alumni will be set up to honor those.  If no professors are willing to put their names to these degrees, then PPN will award the degrees by default.  This will be a theatrical presentation, and will so far honor Perle, Rumsfield (Secretary of Defense), and Schultz (Bechtel et al.).  The presentation will be a venue for explaining what these men are doing.  The press will be invited with an accompanying press release.  The award will also be mailed to the recipients.  If you would like to help out, contact either Peter Wolanin (pwolanin@) or Curtis Deutsch (cdeutsch@).
  • The movie's for movie night were Plan Columbia, 9-11, and Manufacturing Consent.  If you would like more info, contact Amy Hughes (amyshughes_at_hotmail).
  • PPN would like to have a half page ad in the commencement issue of the Prince.  The group thought we should solicit for donations and perhaps display some type of message.  And another ad was also planned aimed at incoming freshmen that goes out to them in August.  If you would like to help out, please contact Peter Wolanin (pwolanin@)
  • Relief efforts for Iraq were also discussed.  American Friends Service Committee (Quakers), would like people to create Personal Care Packages (http://www.afsc.org/iraq/kits.shtm).  The specific items are listed on that webpage.
  • It was also discussed that Princeton students throw away a lot of things.  We hope to get bins in dorms to collect the things, and send them to either Iraq or some place in need.  It was proposed we write letters to the President or Deans.
  • Amy has a room full of signs and other PPN paraphernalia.  If you have extra space, please contact her (amyshughes_at_hotmail)
  • The topic of the weekly demonstrations was also discussed and the winding down of enthusiasm.  It was decided that next week during the time at 2:30pm, the people there will decide whether to continue, and what to do.
  • At the Reunion, it was proposed that we either give "Princeton Peace Network" t-shirts away, or allow people to spray on an added slogan with stencils.  We will discuss this as the reunion gets closer.

Minutes from PPN meeting on Sunday April 20th, 2003

moderator was Damon Della Fave
notes by Peter Wolanin

  1. Update on Saturday protest planning meeting:
    • several people (Damon, Todd, Amy, Carolyn, more?) attended a meeting with people from CFPA and other groups to discuss the direction for the weekly protest.
    • there will be another such meeting on May 3 at 2:30 pm.
    • Next week is Communiversity- this will probably change the way we do the protest next week. We're still waiting for information on how this affects our protest permit. We may have small groups going through the crowd with signs and literature instead of one big group.
    • we will meet at 1 pm at the tiger statue at Palmer square
    • People felt that we needed to refocus our signs and message and possibliy make new signs. For this week, Amy and other interested people will go to the CFPA office before 1:00 next Saturday to select for use the best signs among those available.
  2. working group for new flyer.
    • A working group was formed last week to try to come up with a new flyer to hand out on Saturdays. Todd contributed some iddeas last week, but not much progress otherwise.
    • It was suggested to use our previous flyer (for the Day-Of funeral) as a basis, removing points that are no longer relevant and adding a set of facts that might make people rethink their support for military adventures. For example, a sort of "Harper's Index" listing the amount the US spends on its military compared to other countries, compared to what's spent on education, etc.
    • Possible sections suggested: "why we are still protesting", "why the occupation is illegal", "follow the money trail" and "ways of continuing to resist"
    • The working group was charged to have a flyer done by Saturday for Communiversity.
    • Hana will get volunteers to hand out flyers on Saturday- both during and perhaps before/after the protest.
    • Current members: Amy, Lucia, Todd, Peter, Hana, Elena, Zia, Jonathan If you want to join this working group contact ahughes@
  3. Newspaper ads
    • The Daily Princetonian runs special editions for Communiversity, Reunions, and for incoming freshmen. We could try to run ads in one or more of these issues to reach those audiences- the public at Communiversity, alumni to get involved/donate at reunions, and new student members in the fall.
    • The group endorsed the general idea of spening money from the PPN account on this, and a working group was formed. curent members- Peter, Sujit, and Dhaval.
    • If you want to join this working group contact pwolanin@
  4. Dishonorary Degree Update
    • After the last meeting, the working group came up with the idea of creating a "dishonorary degree Committee" with a sturcture mirroring that of the Princeton committee that decides on honorary degrees. Amy is doing research on the appropriate composition.
    • Amy has drafted letters to peaces groups at other universities and to send to professors and others who might join the dishonorary degree committee.
    • Plan is to have a real ceremony with framed certificates and to invite the dishonored recipients to attend. Assuming they don't attend, it was suggested we might have people accept on their behalf (perhaps wearing masks?).
    • current working group members: Curtis, Amy, Peter. To get involved, contact cdeutsch@
  5. Documentary Films
    • We're looking into showing severl films in the near future, probably around the subject of "Occupation". People suggest that this may be too narrow a focus- perhaps it should be broadened to a more general consideration of imperialism and US foreign policy.
    • Zia suggests the films Ghandi, the Battel of Algiers, and maybe something about the battle of Wounded Knee (esp. if there is a film based on the book "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee"). Damon suggests "Manufacturing Consent". A film about Palestine or Lebanon also suggested.
    • It is suggested we should spread the film showings out over two weeks so students with upcoming deadlines will have more chances to go.
    • Amy and Sujit will work on reserving rooms.
  6. Information Gulf
    • Todd and Curtis have been working to put together a weekly flyer with news articles that may not be seen in the mainstream press.
    • Send articles of interest to Todd Noren todd.noren@ptsem
  7. Over food we had a general discussion of what other peace groups are doing and where to go from here.
moderator for next meeting: Hana

Minutes from PPN meeting on Sunday April 13th, 2003

Notes taken by Lucia
Carolyn facilitated this meeting.

Several issues were discussed and some decisions made.

1) Blood drive.
The success and also some of the flaws of the blood drive were discussed. PPN agreed on the following: a letter will be written to Princeton Borough to thank them for allowing the blood mobile to park on the street and also for not charging for this. Steve will be asked to write to the Red Cross and Peter will send a note to Town Topics for their information.

2) Dishonorary degree project,
Curtis has found out that 8 of the top leaders of the war machine in the Bush administration come from Yale, Princeton, Harvard and a few other Ivy League Schools. A working group will meet to discuss how to pursue this project with the other campuses that may be interested in it. Contact will be made with the undergraduate peace group The dishonorary degree could also be awarded to heads of corporations involved in the war, who have graduated from PU and other schools. There was a proposal to also nominate some people to receive an honorary degree, i.e., to send the PU administration a list of nominees who would be related to peace movement, etc. This was not further discussed as we have to find out the time of such nominations.

3) Media Core by Moveon.
Damon reminded PPN members that moveon.org has organized a media watch corps of volunteers who act as observers of the media and do different things to express their reactions to manipulation etc, such as letter writing, emailing, etc. Interested people may contact moveon.or directly through their web site

4)Newsletter /The Information Gulf
Todd and seminarians for peace have been working on a newsletter featuring alternative news stories, that is information silenced by major media. It was agreed that interested PPN members would also work on this newsletter instead of duplicating efforts. We might also include the letter in ppn ' s website. It was also agreed that the newsletter compilers will be able to include the ppn link and logo in this newsletter without previous consultation with the group. The main point is that all sources should be duly acknowledged.

5)The Vigil: Where to?
As current events have changed the meaning of opposition to war, the future of the vigil was discussed within the wider discussion of what to do next, and where PPN wants to go. Regarding the vigil itself, all present agreed that it needs rethinking but should not necessarily be stopped. The main view was to continue the vigil but change the signs and mainly use it also as a means to distribute information (newsletter and a new statement). This issue will continue to be discussed in future meetings

6) New directions?
The main issue now is what will happen next. It was agreed that each would think about his/her position and make proposals in a future meeting, perhaps in two weeks. Besides occupation, other issues to be addressed may be what has happened in Afghanistan since the US won the war, what has happened in the US, what can the UN do or is willing to do. The need to address the neo/conservative agenda of the Project for a New American cCentury among others, was also raised. PPN needs to discuss these and other related issues when restating its position and goals.

To prepare for this meeting, it was proposed that each would read and reflect on these and other matters. Amy and a working group will prepare a draft of a new ppn statement, explaining why we continue our activities (working group: Amy, Jonathan,Todd, Peter). The main common point was the need to educate ourselves and others on these issues. Therefore, PPN will also organize a film series and perhaps a panel at PU before the end of the semester, as part of an education campaign.
Amy , Todd, Suresh, Peter, Damon and Lucia are in the documentary working group.

At the end of the meeting, a new meeting time was proposed and accepted. The next PPN meeting will start at 6:00 p.m. (Sunday), followed by the potluck.

Minutes from PPN meeting on Sunday March 30th, 2003

1. Notices: Critical Mass Bike Ride through Princeton every Friday at 5pm
DC Protest April 12- don't know yet if CFPA have buses
Performance at the Art's Council Saturday April 4th - watch email for more details
Women in Black - Wednesdays from 5.15 to 5.45 at Nassau Gates
David Quist lecture on campus Monday March 31 - topic on GM foods

Topics covered, working groups formed as below - apologies for all misspelt names:

2. Blood drive. Steve suggested a blood drive with the Red Cross in conjunction with the regular Saturday demonstrations. He has been in discussion with the Red Cross - they would be able to bring a bus and a tentative date of April 12 was discussed. They need additional space - Todd was to approach the folks at the church across the street from Palmer Square.
Working group: Steve, Amy, Peter, Lucia and Todd.

3. Naked Photograph. Amy and Carolyn discussed idea of having a aerial picture taken at the Princeton Battlefield with people spelling out something on the ground. They have talked to folks and have about 15 volunteers already.

4.Dis-honorary Degree. Curtis suggested that we consider doing something around graduation and give a dis-honorary degree to someone who graduated from Princeton and is involved in the current war. To quote Curtis, "culminate in May with a semi-absurd media event". Peter noted that the Princeton informal motto runs along the lines of "In the nation's service and in the service of all nations." Amy is to email the undergrad student group to see what they are thinking about doing around graduation.
Working group: Curtis, Peter, Amy

5. Trial of George Bush or an indictment was suggested by Zia =85 tying i= t in with the Princeton Principles of Universal Jurisdiction.
A working group was formed of: Shawn, Steve, Lucia and Suresh.

6. Display in Frist. Ann Marie suggested a display in Frist to draw students' attention to the reality of war. Discussions went around on how this display would be done, US only or include Iraqi deaths also. Amy volunteered to contact Hana to get an undergrad perspective and to share ideas with undergrad student group.

7. Saturday protests at 2pm. There was some discussion of the shouting matches that went on this week between the pro-war and anti-war groups. Jean is to talk to the police since the agreement had been that there would be 100 yards between the two groups. Hopefully they will be more distant next week. Carolyn is also working on a =BC sheet (based on information that MoveOn put out) that has some guidelines for our group which will encourage folks not to engage in shouting matches. Singing was also suggested at times if the chanting appeared to be denigrating into competition.
Working group: Amy, Suresh, Peter, Caroline, Carolyn.
Next Saturday we will actively circulate to encourage different behavior - Lucia, Curtis, Suresh, Amy, Damon, Caroline, Carolyn.

Minutes from PPN meeting on Sunday March 23rd, 2003

Many ideas were discussed on Sunday and a number of working groups formed, as listed below:

Red Hands Group Ð another Saturday activity. Protesters would dye hands red. Non-toxic forms of fake blood can be researched with a Google search for "fake blood". If blood can be made in time, we will try this idea out next Saturday (March 29) at the weekly demonstration. Group members are:
Carolyn
Steve
Amy

Peace Quilt Ð something that could be started by our group and sent around the country to other groups to continue. Group members are:
Amy
Sharon
Carolyn
Todd (possibly to recruit seminarians to create a panel)

Donations Ð to be collected next Saturday with $ going to a humanitarian group Ð Oxfam or Unicef suggested. Group members are:
Steve
Caroline

Forum with high school students Ð suggested as a way of beginning/continuing dialogue with students interested in anti-war/peace activities. Murray Dodge suggested as a location, with a date possibly in three weeks time. PNN members would attend to share ideas etc. Group members:
Sue
Eliane

Gulf War Veterans panel Ð suggested as a possible panel for future speakers given that an anti- war position from someone who has fought previously will reach a different audience. One suggestion was to contact EPIC Ð Education for Peace in Iraq Center. Group members are:
Carolyn
Amy
Dhavl

Letter to Arab-American Groups Ð discussed as a way of showing support, given that it is highly likely that hate-crimes will increase against these groups. A letter demonstrating support and soliciting ideas of practical help will be sent to various groups. Group members are:
Zia
Caroline

Media Campaign Ð discussed initially in terms of raising profile on various talk-radio shows but broadened to a wider remit of a media campaign. Group members are:

Minutes from PPN meeting on Sunday March 9th, 2003

1. Larry presented a request to the group for help gathering signatures for an anti-war petition to present to the Princeton Township Committee. They are aiming for 1000 signatures from registered voters. PPN agreed to post information on their site about signing the petition, and contact information.

2. Students from the Woodrow Wilson school requested that PPN consider hosting an anti-war petition that they are organizing (since they are not an official group and do not have a website). In addition to students signing, there is the strong possibility that some senior university staff will sign the petition which will lead to considerable publicity. The PPN group supported this request and Curtis will talk to the WW students about logistics and determine who is the actual sponsor of the petition.

3. Carolyn updated the group on the Hopewell High School week of action and in particular the demonstration in Pennington on Friday morning. Students were very excited by it and hope to have a weekly demonstration at the corner of Route 31 and the Pennington-Titusville Road at 7:00 - 7:30 am. All are welcome to join the students.

4. Saturday March 15th is the DC rally "March on the White House". Buses are leaving from Princeton for information check out www.peacecoalition.org . There will also be a large rally in Newark at Broad and Market Streets. On campus Friday March 14th, Ann Marie Brennan is organizing a poster-making event starting at 5 pm at the School of Architecture. Contact her at ambrenna@ . She will also take orders for signs if you cannot make the event.

5. Regarding "day of" events the group decided on a timetable of events listed below, with details to be worked out by a series of working groups. The timetable is as follows:

  • 2.00 pm gathering at the Woodrow Wilson fountain, with a march/funeral procession through campus to gather students for a rally
  • 3.00 pm rally at the Frist Student Center (South Lawn) with student, academic and community speakers
  • 4.00 pm march/funeral procession into town, with route to end at Palmer Square to coincide with CFPA rally at 5.00pm

Locations may vary from what is currently listed above, given negotiations with the university. The funeral procession itself may start earlier but will pass by the gathering point at 2.00 pm. The ARTISTIC working group will further refine the funeral plan. The Seminarians are organizing a brief prayer service on their campus and will march over to join the group for the 2.00 pm march/funeral.

There are 5 working groups as listed below with the name of person(s) coordinating working group, and a brief (and probably incomplete list of tasks).

  • ARTISTIC - Carolyn/Jaya all materials related to funeral procession such as puppets, masks, signs, chants, music makers
  • LOGISTICS - Joe both on and off campus issues such as reserving space, permits, legal aspects, clarifying noise restrictions, identifying peace keepers, coordinating crossing streets, PA system and tables for 3.00 pm rally
  • OUTREACH - Hanna/Caroline publicity prior to and day of invasion on and off campus, flyering day of, phone/email tree, posters, website information, buttons, coordinating with various groups such as Women in Black and high school students,
  • EDUCATION - Larry table at rally, handouts, educational material
  • MEDIA - Zia press communications, contacts, email, follow-up calls,

Each working group will send out a request/meeting time for preparation etc. depending on particulars of their need. Amy is coordinating with all the working groups to ensure that nothing is left out.

Time is of the essence at this stage since a declaration of war could come within days. Please keep an eye on the PPN emails for notices of working group meetings as they will be happening early this week.

Meeting Notes for PPN

1. Introductions

2. Report on D.C. rally from Karen, Curtis, Carolyn & others. Very positive experience for everyone involved. 6 buses from Princeton went. News reporters interviewed many people from the area for story in Trenton Times.

3. Lawn signs are coming in this week. They will need to be assembled next week after the Sunday meeting. There will be a sign distribution event on 2/1 at Monument Square in Princeton (in front of the Municipal Building)...not sure if we decided a time? Karen will look into legality issues (i.e. permits, etc.). Damon will write the press release. Info will go out to CFPA and PPN mail lists. Possibility of T-shirts also discussed (with printed text done on ink jet transfer paper). The signs/shirts can continue to be distributed after 2/1 during the weekly vigils.

4. Cathy announced a Sierra Club (+other org) event on 2/4: protests at/around gas stations. We agreed to organize between 4-6 pm on Washington Rd. near rte. 1. Cathy will make a flier. PLEASE EMAIL HER ANY INFO FOR FLIER ON CONNECTION BETWEEN WAR AND OIL. EMAIL: ckunkel@ People agreed to make signs for this event after the meeting on 2/2.

5. There will be 2 video viewings in the next few weeks (same 2 videos on 2 separate occasions--mainly because students might be away during first viewing). The first video will be a Bill Moyers special on the war. The second is a video that Carolyn made about the 1/18 protest in D.C. The viewings will probably be in Frist. The date of the first viewing is Sat. 1/25. The second is 2/12. Both will be at 7pm.

6. We also discussed having another signmaking peace cafe before the 2/15 rally in NYC. That would be on 2/14 in Murray Dodge 8pm(?)

7. Carolyn will work on a design for new PPN fliers to spread information about the organization/meetings--there were many people who went to D.C. (i.e. undergrads, professors, etc.) who didn't know about PPN. Carolyn will bring the fliers to the next Sunday meeting for feedback/input.

8. There is not much logistical information about the 2/15 rally in NYC yet. The website to check for updates is www.unitedforpeace.org CFPA will be doing another Peace Train going up to NYC on the day of the protest.

9. We discussed the day after/of war events. Agreed to postpone further discussion until next meeting. Carolyn will draw up a draft flier for this event also.

Sunday, January 12th, 2003

Meeting notes for January 12, 2003. Total attendance was 18 which includes a kid, 16 adults and a pet :)

1. Peace Cafe on 17th at 8pm, Murray Dodge basement.
Idea: To combine sign making and cafe together.

  • It was agreed upon that its not worth the effort if people don't show up in large numbers, hence reach out to "outside" people.
  • The cafe should also be more social, i.e., people dont necessarily have to make signs.
  • Karen has been asked to advertise it on her email list (CFPA I assume).
  • Curtis has volunteered to contact the Seminary and WW people and Hana will announce it on the student group lists.
  • PPN will try to supply materials, but people are encouraged to bring as much as possible.

2. Last minute publicity for DC rally on 18th.

  • Curtis proposes doing flyering at Princeton Junction. Need a volunteer staying closeby to do it. Putting quarter sheets on car windshields was also suggested (but that carries a risk of being caught by the cop )
  • Hana will do flyering at the dinky after tuesday.
  • Contact Peter to volunteer for flyering on 13th.
  • Zia suggests writing a column for Daily Princetonian/Princeton Packet and Peter will send out an email urging people to do so.

3. IC Bulletin board.
Idea: To have 2 boards, one on Iraq and other on War on terrorism.

  • Since IC has been turned down to have 2 seperate boards, either the current board has to be shared or apply for another board by PPN.
  • Send suggestions/articles to Hana and Peter.

4. Yard signs.
Idea: Ask people in the community to put up yard signs saying something like "No war on Iraq" etc.

  • PPN will order it and distribute it. It was also suggested to charge $5 for each, but this needs to be worked out.
  • Zia proposes putting up these signs at one place (similar to the red flags put up for AIDS awareness outside Frist). We should have a press release, photographs and start off. Venues suggested were Palmer Square and the War memorial. We could also do it as a part of saturday vigils.
  • Plan to order around 200 signs.
  • Peter will do the ordering and plan to have these out by 25th (before the UN report is out on 27th).

6. Rally on the day war starts.
Idea: Have an emergence rally at a local scale the day US starts bombing. This will also help other people who think alike to know us.

  • It was agreed that this requires lots of labour hours, tasks involved being advertising, gettin speakers, media followup & interviews etc.
  • CFPA is organising a rally the same day at 5pm (Palmer Square), so probably we should start off within the campus and join them.
  • Walk outs suggested. It was also noted that other campuses are also networking to have similar walk outs.
  • Peter proposes meeting outside Nassau Hall. This needs a permit.
  • Curtis suggests inviting faculties who are against this war and getting them involved.
  • It was sort of agreed to keep the 5pm rally as a focus. Meeting within the campus should be to bring people together and build energy.

Sunday, January 5th, 2003

  • A new flyer needs to be made for tabling.
We would like to possibly add reasons and ways to resist war and nonviolent methods of opposition. Ideas to put on the new flyer:
    - War tax resistance, by calling phone companies and refusing to pay excise tax.
    - Information on disproportionate recruitment of minorities.
    - No new information from UN Inspectors.
    - Rangel's bill on the draft.
    - Bush's differing response with respect to North Korea and Iraq.
Will meet to discuss these ideas and more Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at 6pm in Carl Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding located at the corner of Prospect and Olden (86 Olden Street).
  • Sign/Puppet Making Party on January 12, 2003 at 2pm at 2 Dickinson (across from the U-Store).
    - Please bring any materials you have.
  • Discussed possible walk out, mass demonstration, and/or die-in on the day of the war.
    - Mass demonstration would most likely happen at = noon.
    - Another World may sponsor a possible walkout preceding the demonstration.
  • If you would like to help out with flyering for the January 18, 2003 demonstration in Washington, DC, contact Peter
For more information on the rally please check out www.peacecoalition.org or call 609-924-5022.
  • Study Break Films
    - PPN will host films this week and next week.
Possible films include Hidden Wars, and Paying the Price
    Possibly coordinate with Wilson College.
  • Peace Cafe
    - Peace Cafe planned for January 17, 2003 to kick off the rally happening on the = 18th.
    - Planned to take place at 8pm at Murray Doodge, to make signs/puppets.
  • Photo Exhibit: portraits from Iraq by EPIC
Education for Peace in Iraq Center (EPIC, http://epic-usa.org) could possibly come mid-February possibly in the Frist Campus Center.
    - PPN may plan to have a kick-off speaker such as Richard Faulk.
Sources of funding needed to be determined.
  • A second board will be started focusing on Perspectives of the War on Terrorism moderated by Amy Hughes.  Please send cartoons, international articles, analysis, fact sheets, etc., to ppn@princeton.edu.
